On my 89 Carrera Coupe, there is a rotating cover (over the bulb) that actuates contacts, allowing the light to come on. When you close the bulb cover, light goes out.

BEST!

I'm not 100% sure but I think you need to turn on the parking lights and open the cover.

Parking or headlights must be on. Rotate the chrome cover open on the light and it should come on.

Getting heater hoses to and from heat exchangers and replacing the aux footwell fans(which i got used) to see if that works. Also not sure if my reverse lights work so going to check that too and see where the problem is... Prolly the tranny switch or hopefully just cleaning out connections!

there is a pin in the transmission that pops out and makes the contact to the reverse switch, make sure that is working. Some great tips in search, of course after verifying there is power to the switch and the bulbs and the grounds are good. heater hoses are a pain, really need a lift for them.

"I can see," said the blind man. My engine compartment light has never come on. At least until today when I tried it with the parking lights on. Awesome. Thanks guys.

Ok, with the parking Lights on and chrome cover open I still have no light in engine compartment. Bulb checks good when out of car with a meter. Would there be a fuse in the loop that has gone bad? would the parking lights still work? 1987 Carrera Coupe.
Is there a wiring diagram on site for 1987 model Porsches

Drone,

I'm not an expert but I'll chime in with my limited experience. The engine compartment lamp is tied in with the front and rear parking lamps on the driver's (left hand) side of our cars. Do yours currently work? If so, you'll need to diagnose some stuff.

First, check for burnt fuses up front (I don't know which one). If the fuses check out OK, I would check the wiring to the lamp itself because these units are subject to a lot of engine heat.

Second, check the lamp itself for the same reason I previously mentioned...mine was toast. I wound up purchasing a new one, problem solved.

Good luck.

Mine is an 88 911 and does not require that the parking lights are on. What it does need is some jiggling of the wires to the switch. I think I need to sand down the contacts more as there might be paint preventing good contact after the reprint.

Parking lights do work so I'll get the meter out and see if I have power to the contacts and work back from there
Thanks for the help I'll report back with progress and if I get it to work I guess I'll be the new SME (Subject Matter Expert)

Removed the fixture and took some scotch brite to all the contact surfaces and the crome cover along with the contacts on the bulb upon reinstallation it works like new
