My eyes are open and my internet searches are for 1980-1994. I've driven a C4, got a PPI followed by an estimate for a $7k top end in the near future to cure leakdown numbers in the 20-30% range. Still looking...

I sometimes see 964s that have made it to ~100k miles w/o a rebuild and those can be affordable but I don't see any prudent way to approach this except to presume they will need significant work during my ownership. I say significant because I understand that all older performance cars need something every year. I could be wrong but it seems the earlier cars are a safer bet at my budget and there is very little I can't or won't want to fix myself if I get severe sticker shock from estimated labor bills @ $120/h.
Based on my limited research, I think most of the problems were with the early 964s (1989 & 1990 I think?). I believe the next couple of years they had them Pretty well sorted out and if you find a C2, you have no worries about the AWD system needing repairs.

That being said, they are indeed a bit more complex than the earlier cars and people have mixed views on the aesthetics of the bumpers. I like the look of the earlier cars but some of the lowered and modded 964s look really bad ass.
