Need a little trunk help...

Basically the pics I took of the evaporative sytem on my 71 disapeared when my old laptop's hard drive blew up. Then my painter kept the car for almost a year. I have all the components...



And I drew a rough schematic

I just don't remember exactly where the black plastic cannister, the charcoal cannister and the white (yellowish now) container mount....and how. My notes have the charcoal cannister in the front trunk are here...

But I believe it is mounted out here...

Anyway, I have forgotten and need some pics to school me

Hi Speedo,

I'll let the experts weigh in with pics but wanted to respond to get you going. I believe the black cube is located close to the driver side windshield washer fluid sprayer / instrument panel harness. I think it just sits there. The charcoal canister is located flat on the floor near the washer fluid res / fuse box area and should have a strap that bolts to the floor. The yellow/white canister is mounted under the driver side fender (you have great access). That canister has a strap that wraps around it-- I didn't see it in you pics.

BTW- glad you went with that color. Pretty awesome!

Of the charcoal cannister braided cloth/rubber lines...and where they connect behind the gas tank. Also the plastic tank outside the inner fender.

The vapor recovery tank fits on the rear of the headlamp bucket and there is a strap that holds it there.

The fender tank is secured by a steel strap that attaches to a couple of shorter straps that should be tacked to the headlight bucket.

The lower hose clamps to the small tube protruding from the inner fender bulkhead. The small upper hose goes through the grommet which appears to be still present in your inner panel just above the tube. From there it continues to the small hose fitting on the charcoal cannister. In the attached picture, I'm not using a cannister, so my small hose is vented externally and I've since plugged the hole.

The black box attaches under the cowling just inside of the left hood hinge. It is held in place (originally) by a black square cross section rubber band. The attachment points look like two inverted longhorn cattle horns mounted fore and aft of the box location on the underside of the cowling. The bubber band goes around the rear cattle horns, between the box outlets and around the front cattle horns. The box outlets go toward the front of the car. I'm pretty sure the black rubber bands are nla, and I don't know of anyone making repros. Look around your shop. You may already have one. It took me a while to realize what it was when I did my re-assembly. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the black box attachment.

My heater blower is now in place, and one of the last things to do before installing my gas tank is to secure the black box (expansion chamber) under the cowl. Can anyone show me a decent placement pic behind the drivers hood hinge?

Don't have a picture but you can locate the position by feel. There should be two prong-like pieces welded to the front underside of the cow. These prongs hold the rubber strap used to secure the black box to the cowl. The box fits between the two prongs. (Note: this is from memory so the location of the prongs is not certain. What is certain is they should be there and the box is secured with a rubber strap.)

I don't have a picture, but it is mounted next to the drivers side strut with a small bungee cord.

pressurize the "the black cube" to test for leaks BEFORE you put it in - you often cannot see the leaks

you can use an O-ring to replace the flexible rubber "bungee cord" - mine just sits there on its own

- replace all hoses with new hose that is rated for fuel vapor (regular PVC is not adequate)

I only saw the one before, but when I knew there were a pair...I knew what to look for. The hardware store offered up big fat rubber bands (which I grabbed) but based on what Randy said, I am going to look for giant O rings, or maybe bike tube rubber ...hmm. Thanks for all the help guys. The tank and pieces of the system go back together this week. I will post on here...

Looks like you've got it covered, but to build on Randy's comments re the documentation value of this thread, here are some pics 'n stuff.

Box Mount





If it's not obvious, that is the original 40 yr old bungee -- for however long it lasts.

Mine leaked from cracks around the bulls-eye (below). I cleaned it up as best I could on the inside, and dropped in a puddle of POR-15. So far so good.



The tubing is Tygon 5/16 & 1/2 inch i.d. from McMaster-Carr. I haven't been able to find a clear alternative. Please post here if anyone knows of one -- I'd like to get rid of the yellow.

The small dark cylinder in the bigger tube entering the box is a check valve. Not part of the original setup, but it lets me sleep better when inverted.

Just finished up and installed my gas filler tube. There is what looks like an overflow that exits the left side of the tube near the top. There is a corresponding hole in the outer fender directly across from it that looks to be where the tubing that connects to that overflow passes through. Where does that overflow tube go? Does it just dump to the ground , or does it connect to the plastic expansion chamber behind the left headlight. I cannot tell from either one of these schematics where the overflow goes.

I figured it out late this morning by looking under the fender up at the hole exiting the filler area and saw the fitting going back in through the fender. But what doesn't make sense...is that this is the overflow. Why send it back to the charcoal canister and then the expansion tank? What if the shutoff on the gas station pump is bad, won't the system just fill up the charcoal filter and the expansion tank? In that case I would rather have it draining to the ground.
