probs w/964s?

so now we're looking at 964's

in our price range they typically have plus 100k miles on 'em

what major work should i anticipate if the engine hasn't been rebuilt.

thanks. Again.

Oil leaks. Pre '91 engines were gasketless and very leaky. Re-seals are expensive.

HVAC Fans and servos are expensive and hard to trouble shoot.

servos are not available new or rebuilt either. That is what was the tipping point and the sale of my 964.

Apart from compression and leakdown numbers, you also want to look at the dual plug distributor. If it has never been replaced, you will need to do that. The rubber belt drive deteriorates from ozone created by sparking. Porsche came out with a 'fix' and that was to plumb in some fresh air from the cooling fan to blow air into the distributor to dilute the ozone. Even with that fix in place, the belts last about 15 yrs MAX...we are now in year 20 + depending on which MY you choose.

The distributor does NOT have to be replaced, the belt replacement is all it needs and it isn't all that expensive to have replaced. The pre-92's had no head gasket. MANY have been re-machined to take the gasket, and even if they didn't it doesn't mean there is an issue. Get a PPI and have it checked out, go from there.

The belt is not that easy to replace and a remanufactured distributor is about 200 bucks (core exchange) and not dificult to replace. Either way, the belt is the weak link there.

Look at the 92 C2 and up model year. Do a PPI.

Major work at 100k miles on these C2 model years if they have never been done.
1. Clutch, PP, fork upgrade and new DMF flywheel
2. Distributor belt
3. Alternator VR, belts and bearings
4. Torn CV boots maybe
5. Rear wheel bearings
6. If it smokes on decel, valve guides
7. Power steering drive seals
8. Oil leak at breather, oil pressure sensor
9. Oil tank hoses
10. Spark plug wires and coils

If you don't diy, will cost a lot of money.

some are pretty dry and some leak starting at the front oil cooler, steering rack and hoses, rocker oil lines, oil tank and hoses, steering pump seal and every joint on the engine. find a dry one.

Ask the same question in the 964 forums before you decide.

i don't think there any different than SC, Carrera cars, just normal upkeep and routine maintenance, find a good one. there is a good dissy belt discussion going on now in the forum, belts bushings and bearings every 50k miles will make it happy. Accessories on later cars will add to cost overall but almost all the mods you would want to do to early cars are factory done (big breaks, coil overs, better transmission, higher horsepower, better air-condition, safer) so, it's a trade off.

New servos are available but are expensive.

They come up cheap on eBay from time to time if you're diligent - I've snagged 4 new servos for cheap that way.

Finally, a German Rennlister rebuilds them. Better than new, with better components than the factory. Not cheap, but it's a 20 year old Porsche, and the best of the air-cooled.

The rest of the naysaying in this thread is "worst case scenario" stuff. Do your homework and get a proper PPI, and you won't look back. A well maintained 964 is the BEST buy in the Porsche world right now. Bar none. Check out Rennlist's 964 forum and ask the folk who live with them everyday, rather than relying on other folks' second hand opinions.
