Oh man, I've dealt with that before. Fast Orange works like a charm. Takes the stuff off in mere moments, but I had to make sure to rinse it off my pup very well.

I use a mixture that is fairly effective and starting to make it's way around the net. Thiols (which are what make up the smell in a skunks spray) have a low to zero solubility in water, can be easily oxidized with Hydrogen peroxide. Add in baking soda to catalyze the reaction and also doubles over as an odor absorber. Add a little dish soap where the lipids in the dish soap act as the carrier to help solubilize the oxidized thiols (which have a higher solubility factor now) and bam. Just don't get it in your pets eyes or nose. Where some latex gloves, let it soak in for about 5 minutes, rinse and then wash your pet with the normal pet shampoo. You will have a happy pup after that. I just have to attack the back door and brick wall when I get home. She was sprayed right in that area. We have noticed a large increase in the skunk population around the area this year.

Now that the weather is on it's way to Spring, the skunks are starting to hang around my place more. They like to hang around my garage, especially at 2am when I make my way back up to the house after a project... Luckily I have not been sprayed!

You can make a simple press tool out of some threaded rod and a PVC coupler and cap. I did this for my trans a number of years ago.
CT Pelican tool request (p265c)

Thanks kevin, you have been a big help with this. I think I have a press tool laying around the shop somewhere. I am not sure of the size, so I might just make up a handy one like you did.

Kevin, do yo know where to source the o-ring for the differential cover. Mcmaster doesn't go up to 202mm for a size.

If you have a wooden deck, the skunks LOVE to make their home underneath them. I've had so many friends & coworkers tell stories about skunks under their decks.
Incidentally my wife wanted to put a deck on the front of our house a few years back. Me being the minimalist get-by-with-bare-minimum kinda guy, I was not keen on the idea (more stuff for the K-man to maintain) for a lot of reasons. Well aside from the staining/painting drama we've been through (Cabot water based stain sucks butt BTW), I have plenty of chipmunks and I believe a skunk living under it. Predictable as the bleepin' sunrise, like I always say...... Needless to say its been a good bit of work with various repellent products, as well a bit embarrassing peeing around the deck at night to help keep the chipmunks at bay. Those suckers are relentless. This year target practice begins with the pellet gun! Fine with me, as i've been meaning to play with that pistol for years. Now I gots good reason!!! ![]()

I'd recommend just paying the $14 for the factory o-ring or you can make one thru McMaster with an o-ring kit.
3.5 mm cord stock plus some super glue and you're all set? Their kit with the jig to make o-rings seems unnecessary in this case. If it was an o-ring with critical sealing under pressure, i'd be concerned about making sure the o-ring is nicely aligned at the glue joint. But for this application, I don't think the precision of the joint is of great concern. If it's a bit misaligned? NO big deal. Just put the joint at the 12 o'clock position and let gravity flow of the gear oil take care of the rest? Note that the 202mm is of course the diameter. So you'll need 202 x pi = 634mm = 24.98 inches of cord.

Kevin, yeah I assumed the 202 was ID because that's how they are normally listed. I got a price from the local porsche dealer for $19. I'll probably just go with that and save myself the hassle.

So it looks like ther ARE 8 magnets after all. Keep us posted if you find out why you only get 4 continuity hits.

Looks like you could use a new axle flange seal on the side cover.
Also, no better time than the present to inspect your axle shafts. Pivot a CV joint and get a good look at the groove the ball bearing rides in. You can swipe away the grease to see the condition of the groove. Some brightness is common. However if you find flecks of metal and the groove is pitted, you'll want to plan to replace the axles in the near future.

Let me tell you my story that may relate to your issue. After I rebuilt my 915, my speedo registered about 1/2 what speed I was actually going. I went through pretty much the same steps you are, measuring the pulses etc. When I dissassembled my diff, I found that every second magnet had virtually no magnetism. Even more curious, it had been perfect prior to the rebuild. I had some suspicion the tranmission shop that I had remove the differential bearing somehow (on purpose?) damaged every second magnet. So, a used magnet wheel from a fellow Pelican member and I was good to go.

FYI: 1 turn of a single wheel with an open differential will turn the differential 1/2 turn.

Please explain. So are you saying that when I had the car propped up, 2 full tire rotations would have been a full rotation on the magnetic ring in the differential?

If only 1 wheel is turning; you need to turn to rotating wheel 2 turns to get 1 diff turn. Alternatively, you can turn both wheels 1 turn to get 1 diff turn.
It was unclear the state of your second wheel during the test.
