Metal strapping around cylinders

I don't have a really good picture yet of what I'm talking about here so bear with me.

I'm wondering what the purpose is of the thin metal strapping that goes around the heads of the motor. They also seem to hold a thin piece of sheet metal down, very close to the engine case. Ive taken the motor out of the car, and I have removed the intake and the cooling shroud. So my perspective here is from the top of the engine looking downward.

Any idea?

You are seeing the retainers for the deflectors, they dont go all the way around. Be careful they can travel at extreme velocity in unintended directions.

Ahh,

Good to know they are not mission critical. I'll have to replace a few while the engine is out.

Thanks All!!

I removed mine and they are bathing in a cleaning solution; except for the 2 pieces next to the cam towers... I just couldn't get them out and they only move so far. Is there a trick to it?

No, they are mission critical, without them your heat shields will rattle like crazy and your engine will melt.

You also want to modify them as outlined in Bruce Anderson's tome. This reduces head temperatures significantly... a good thing. Don't underestimate how important these are; they make a big difference. You might tell us what year your car is... it helps when you ask a question like this.

no trick, they are held by thin clips, just push down and out starting from the outer one

Not quite, unfortunately.
I removed all the clips and all the tin with the exception of the 2 pieces next to the cam towers. They wiggle but they seem to get stuck past a certain point. I guess I can always used brute force but I wanted to know if there was a trick to it before proceeding.

THe trick is you have to squish the top of the tin to allow it to squeeze between the cylinder and the chain housing/case. The top of the tin is punched out to create a piece of metal the retaining tab can grab onto. You have to flatten that pushed-out section of metal to get it to clear. Sounds silly but it's what you've got to do when the tin is being removed without the engine in a partial state of disassembly (chain housings removed).

Thanks Kevin! That actually makes sense. It is always the first time that takes so long because I haven't seen that part out of the engine so I was going blind and concerned I would damage anything...

Hey Kevin, you were spot on. Draco stopped by my house and also verified that was the issue. All tin now removed and in a cleaning solution prior to painting! Thanks!

Actually what looks to be broken is the top strap that seems to secure the pieces that are under the motor. The one missing on my rig is the one that is up against the oil cooler.

What are the odds of this thing slipping down between the cylinder and coming off?

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the offer! I have to pull the intake off again and take a look at how much of the vertical piece is left. If it is still serviceable, I may take you up on that. I fear that the top of the vertical piece is missing through corrosion though.

I'll repost with pics as soon as I get the intake off again.
