and what sadistic SOB designed...
the front left hood shock mount. I finally just put the pin in, pocketed the clip, and called it a day...maybe if I take some meds I'll try again. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the lower pin in from the back side (so I can get the clip on) unless I start ripping stuff out from around the mount. Like the gas tank filler...that's a good place to start.

That's exactly what I did three years ago and the pin never came out until I took it out last weekend. You should be fine. You see. only two parts actually began the production line process at Porsche in those days. The little clip you speak about and the clip that goes on the clutch peddle assembly. Wait till you try the latter!

I second the "pin in, no clip" method. I did the same thing and the pin has stayed put just fine. There is a good thread regarding the pin and clip replacement with those little medical clamp-things (can't remember the Marcus Welby name right now). I actually had to have the girlfriend get her much smaller hand in there to get it back together. Nostatic - time to get the wife a pair of weekend coveralls!

It's a 10 minute job if you make a little tool to hold the pin (female spade connector on a coat hanger wire). I think I held the clip with needle nose pliers or the medical equivalent (hemostats?). Those skinny medical pliers people used to use to hold joints/remove fish hooks/hold blood vessels shut.

That particular procedure is a nut-buster, when I bought my SC the hood shocks were shot. I bought new ones, and to this day only the passenger side has been installed. Going to have to try the methods described here; kind of forgot about it since the one new one holds it up.

i cheat on the pin too. pop the clip off with a long screwdriver, push out the pin with a 90° hook tool, fish it out with a magnet on a stick, reinstall it from the outside with needle nose pliers, and stick a small blob of dum-dum over the head.

I did this procedure 3 times, I did what JohnWalker did with a dum dum glob. One time, I managed to spend an hour and did it right with the clip, but it was not fun, a contortionist act, or you must have 9 fingers, 3 hands the size of my one-year old.

I'm suprised the clip was even there for you guys. When I replaced my hood shocks it wasn't and the job was a bunch easier because of it! It's not as if the pin is going to pop out with the shocks compressed when the trunk is closed.

I think that was the first job I did on my car - 101 Projects estimates 1 hour, I took 2 or more. My son was holding the flashlight and my hand was bleeding where the air cable scratched it. But I got it in there. I think it's one of those deals where you have to teach your hands where everything is because you can't see much while they're in there!

I just installed more hood struts AGAIN today. I am getting very good at putting in the pins with the clips. I use hemostats and dentil floss - start to finish in less than 15 minutes.
My problem is that the new struts push up the rear end of the hood. I tried Weltmeisters and now Vertex's heavy duty's - both caused the same problem. I am going to pull them out and rig up the fibreglass rod. I am done with hood struts.

If you think the front hood shock is a pain, wait until you have to mess with the rear lid shock(s).
