Alternative heat source
Hi all I have removed the metal jacket from around my headers because of rust and fear of exhaust fumes entering the cabin because of said rust.
Because of this I now have no heat and was just wondering if anyone had used a forward oil cooler as a radiator for heat. I was thinking of housing a small oil cooler in the heater air stream to use as a heat source for cabin heat and was wondering if anyone else had tried this or if there was a reason this should not be done. ![]() ![]() From one who knows a bit about Porsches and the "rust belt", the best and only answer is: "SSI". You are kidding yourself thinking anything else will do. In the winter the oil temp barely gets high enough to open the engine thermostat, never mind heating a front radiator. It might work if you could bypass the engine cooler and use only a front radiator. If you want to try this, I would be happy to make oil lines/hose to locate this "radiator" any place you like in your 911. Used SSI's are out there for less money than building a oil heater system no matter where it is located. Len ![]() |

i had the same idea . oil could be routed from anywhere in the system the front cooler would probrobly be the worst since its the last thing to get heat. I was thinking of doing it to my 914 but i really dont need heat in it so its not worth the work. but stick a heater core type of thing in the smuglers box and fan it into the cabin maybe. I think it could work if done right.

You're driving a 911 in Ontario, in the winter.
You cut the heaters off because you were afraid of rust. SSI's dude.

Yea, that front oil cooler will never see hot oil in the winter time. I can't get my engine up to 180 in the dead of winter and I live in Oklahoma.
Buy some SSI or a used set of factory heat exchangers.

Thanks for the replies guys yes I know the SSI"s are the way to go and I do not drive my car in the winter only summer spring and fall so only looking for enough heat for defrosting the window if required and to temper the air in the cabin.
Only removed the metal from my old exhaust because the outer shell was to badly rusted to repair. Was thinking of the oil cooler or heater in my heater system as an experiment to give me something to tinker with over the winter months and was just wondering if any one else had tried this. I had a Cal look Bug back in the day with a 2.3 dual Webers and headers. It had 2 big oil coolers I built a fiberglass box around with a squirrel cage fan. Talk about instant solid reliable heat. Diverted it out the rear quarter windows in summer months.
