The fact that he works out of his shop may mean that he hasn't done very many transmission rebuilds. Maybe he's done hundreds, I don't know, but it is just an indication to me that a little more due diligence is in order on your part. You've sort of done it backwards, since the guy already has your car.
I'll say it another way... I would seek out the best guy I could find for a rebuild of a gearbox which may not be the closest guy. The guy I have in mind would have worked on more gearboxes than you could count, not just a handful. The guy that works on my Porsches has done just that, for decades. There's really nothing special about your usage of the car. You aren't a racer and the occasional DE is not going to tax your car, if you drive it properly. I wouldn't warranty a broken gearbox if it was obvious that operator error was the cause but I also wouldn't expect to not have a warranty just because a year from now I might decide to put 50 miles on the car at a DE. It's your money, your gearbox, so make yourself comfortable with whatever you decide. JR |

Do you do much business with people on Amazon? They all ship out of their garages. Judge vendors by the quality of their work, not where they have their shop. I heard that Motor Meister has a great, big, organized shop...

No, I don't. I buy from local shops, for the most part. I don't search the internet to save the last nickel on anything I buy.

Perhaps it's time for "The Ultimate G50 Rebuild" thread.
BTW, one of the best mechanics/machinists in SoCal works out of his home shop. One of the most reputable Porsche repair shops in the area has him do all their machine shop work plus rebuilds if they are swamped.
