For Show and not too much dough: Ferrari 308GT4. Not as pretty as a GT, but they sound a whole lot better then all but the earliest carb'd 308 GT(S)'s. They also cost a lot less at about $14K to $20K and most people would still recognize it as a Ferrari.

For Show and a lot more dough: Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 (2 headlight model). A beautiful car for a reasonable ($40K - $60K) amount of dough for a V12 Ferrari.

For Go and not a lot of dough: Buy a TVR 2500(M) and a used 5.0 Mustang motor. Pitch the TR6 boat ancher from the TVR and drop in the 5.0. After a few bruised knuckles and some swearing, it should go right in. A few more dollars to graft some vented brakes on to the beast and I'd be able to smoke just about anything with 4 wheels which seats more then 1 person. I could most likely also do it for less then $10K!

If you think about all the great cars out there, it's kind of like a candy store.

My "someday I'd like to have" list, which tries to be economically reasonable (only cars I could conceivably afford someday, let's say under $50K):

- Jaguar XKE S1 fixed-head (have wanted one of these since I was a little boy)

- BMW 3.0 CS/CSL (probably the loveliest coupes I know of)

- Ferrari 308/328 (not at all my most desired Ferraris, but remember the price limit)

- AC Cobra (I'd actually prefer a good replica so I could actually drive it)

- Lotus Esprit Turbo (I think this goes back to James Bond fantasies. But it would be a nice car to drive, when it drove. And they're pretty cheap, for good reason I suppose)

- Land Rover Defender 110 (I had a '63 Landie, sold it to a guy in SLO, and want to buy it back someday. Failing that, I'd take a recent one. There's nothing like a LR)

- Some bikes: Ducati 750SS from the 1970s, BSA Gold Star Rocket, BMW R90S.

I've been fantasizing about building an Ultima GTR. However I would have it powered by a 993 TT with a Quaife 6sp Sequential Trans. I guess my way of a 962 for the street.

So many cars - so little time

There are many cars I would like to own if I didn't have the P-car. Some if the things I have been looking at:

A Ferrari Mondial - sort of like the P-car - can take the family on a short trip and still have the performance - lots of curb apeal - good prices on them now - but the service scares me.


A Sunbeam Tiger - with the 289 Ford mill - what a great car - although I have a TR-6 I won't part with so - this would be sort of redundant

A mid 60's Jeepster - with updated running gear so you can take it on trips - just a classic 60's look

A Series II Land Rover - I think they are so neat

Late 80's Audi Coupe Quattro - I had the coupe - not the quattro at the time and loved it. I think this would be a neat car for not much money - again performance and you can take the family on a trip

That is a short list - there are alot of other neat cars at affordable prices - only limited by garage space - wifely concerns - and $.

A good Shelby Cobra Replica with an authentic 427 sideoiler making about 500 horsepower and a 4 speed. No radio, no top. No excuses, just in your face power, ofcourse I'd probably kill myself, so I'll stick to more sane vehicles.

i've gotta go with the lotus elise, if only it was street legal in the US... i hear it's coming in the next year or so, but the new model is slightly more "rice" looking than the original...

great car though - no frills, very light, and handles amazingly well...

I'm not sure. The RS4 isn't an SUV. I suspect Porsche was thinking they wanted something that could be off-road capable while still being "a Porsche." The reality of course is that almost all SUVs are driven only on the pavement. That makes a good argument for an RS4-type vehicle...kind of a 911 station wagon, and while they're at it, a 3-door hatchback. I think they could do something that would have great style and be fast and useful. Of course maybe with the Pepper they were trying to make something that wasn't even close to the sports car shape so there wouldn't be direct comparisons.
