SC to Carrera brake conversion questions

I'm putting an entire Carrera brake system on my SC (for race class reasons), and just installed the rear calipers/rotors, a few things:

On the SC the spring for the pad pins don't have this extra retainer that looks like it should lock into something, am I missing something?

The SC hard line in the rear comes out of the bottom of the caliper, the Carrera out of the inside at a 45 degree angle. As my hard lines are 35 years old i'll just buy new ones. I bent up the SC's to fit just to keep the system closed..

The SC hard line mount -

Hey Gary,
I want to do this also on my 82SC.. Assume it's just upgrading to Carrera calipers and hubs, and it bolts up to same strut mounts holes?
thanks

Yes, but no hub change; new calipers, new rotors, new pads, and new hard lines from caliper to flex line in the rear (Pelican has them, $14 each, in stock). I had to go one step further and install the rear break pressure limiting valve but I wouldn't unless doing so to be legal racing.

I don't see anything in PET about that little clip on the pad spring so unless I hear different i'll order the hard lines tonight.. just odd, it MUST clip to something? I bet I'll just end up clipping it off.

That's to hold the wire for the brake pad wear sensor. I yanked my sensor off the pads and zip tied the wire out of the way. Don't worry about it on the clip.

And like everyone else in this thread, I am getting ready to do this too.

My question is about the master cylinder. It is the same?

I believe so, yes. I have no wiring for brake pad sensors so thos clips will be disappearing, thanks!

Guess the front rotors had to be changed anyway!

Yep, thanks Cory. I'm just going to Dremel them off as they are useless to me. I ended up buying all the hard lines as the fronts took some persuasion to get off the rubber lines on the struts.

Caliper looks great. Did you send them out to be restored or do it yourself?

+1 As someone else mentioned... dremel the pad clips to get rid of the wear sensor tabs AND install the rear bias valve. It goes in the trunk near the MC. Also, one can use the SC pads as they are the same size/shape as carrera pads without the provision for sensors.

Really? The calipers are noticeably larger, Carrera pads are the same size as SC's? I have the restrictor and the two metal lines that go to it thanks to Grant here on Pelican..

Carrera advantage is in the rotors, bigger heat sink.

I get that part, but I can just toss in the pads I was using in the SC (PFC 97) and go? I just assumed the bigger calipers took bigger pads!

The front calipers are almost exactly the same between the cars. That 'almost' comes in the form of a spacer between the caliper halves that allows for the use of the thicker carrera rotors. So, if you've already found a favorite pad, you can keep using it after the overhaul.

The SC rears aren't especially thermally challlenged, so upgrading just the front calipers/rotors to 3.2 spec could be a good approach for some. Bias won't change, and you wouldn't need the pressure limiting valve at all then.

Yeah. I had a set of Carrera calipers restored by PMB performance. When it came time to order pads, he told me to just order SC pads. I did, and they worked.

To note, I performed this conversion and the only changes I made. Front and rear Calipers and rotors, and rear hard brake lines from a Carrera. I bought new soft lines, pads, and master cylinder from an SC to be thorough.

Yes, the only difference between SC and 3.2 Carrera calipers is the thicker spacer between the calipers halves and the pad warning system.

They also use the same 20.6mm m/c

You are still going to want to run SRF, as these are still very hard working brakes

Absolutely! Just have to figure out what version PFC's i'll be going with once I burn through the rest of my 97's.. Going to the PFC seminar at Speedsport Thursday, hope to get some good input from the rep.
