External Oil Tstat set point

Quick question, what are the opening and closing temps of said thermostat, 87 Carrera?
Also, I am considering a dash switch to turn on the cooler fan before the 240F of the cooler mounted sensor.
I was thinking to match the fan operation with the opening of the tstat to the cooler.
Thanks,

I added a dash switch, and turn it on when temp goes north of 200 deg. If you feel around on the dash instrument cluster vinyl cover, you will find a "slot" for a switch location behind the vinyl. It's for the rocker switch type used for a rear wiper or sunroof switch. I have never let the temp get high enough to test the internal fan temp sensor turn on!

Thanks that's exactly it, 200 is about half way between the two lines right?
So turning the fan on keeps it from going up further?
Here in so Fl I would like to keep it from getting close to the second line.

Yes, even on a HOT day, keeps the temp 210deg or lower.

Thanks uwanna, I also got a tip to wire it in parallel so it works either way.

That is 100% correct. The same way I did mine.

Here's the part# for the rocker switch I used. It's actually a "rear wiper switch".
911-613-321-01-OEM
check the PP parts catalog listing and you'll see a pic of the location on the dash to put it.
This PP tech article shows how to add a fan cooler relay etc, which you already have, but also explains the wiring for a dash mounted switch in parallel .

The external t-stat turns on at the same temperature as the internal t-stat. Both use the same regulator unit that is stamped with an 83C on it (~181F).

If you don't use your fog lights, you can wire the right fog light connector/pigtail for the chassis to connect with the disconnect for the oil cooler fan. They are both right there in that right front corner of the chassis. The only caveat is for the switch to turn on your fan, you have to have the at least the parking lights on.

Thanks uwanna, I was wondering about it's location on the dash, but I was looking thru Digikey for a switch with a light so I would know when its on. Have a bad memory. They have a small push button that lights, and small rocker that lights too.

Hey that's nice 86Targa, big question is will it screw in the top of the cooler? I think I would rather go thru the pita of removing the cooler , replace the wire terminal and be done than cut hole in the dash and run wires.

If you really want to do this right:

^^^^^
You will need this, if you don't have one, this is what I did.

Find a used one from an '88 or later 3.2.

And a relay.

pm me as needed.

Good luck,

Gerry

Here's the pics of the rocker switch and location on the dash. No hole to cut in the metal,
just cut out the vinyl. Then you just need one wire to relay #2 and one to ground. Do this:
Run a 16 gauge wire from terminal 85 of relay #2 to one terminal of a switch, and connect the other switch terminal to ground. A rear wiper switch works well for this, and can be located in the stock position. On many cars, the hole is already cut in the metal dash. You can locate it by pressing on the dash along the left of the steering wheel below the instruments. Cut out the vinyl with a razor knife, and the switch snaps into place.)
You can also install a mini lighted rocker switch if you desire. By the way, not my pics,
got them from another thread on the subject.

That will work.
Make sure the relay coil along with the fan are properly fused.

A fuse is probably not really necessary in the switch circuit. The switch just energizes relay #2 in a parallel circuit with the cooler sensor.

Thanks guys,
uwanna has a clean switch install, but there is wiring to the back of the dash Whereas 86 911T has just s switch replacement that involves dropping the cooler, but since my car is an 87 it has all the wiring and relay already there so its an invisible "upgrade".

So 86 911 T where did you get the NASON switch, I did not see it referenced together with the harness?

I don`t need the harness just the switch, attached a pic, NOT my car but to show the set up. The owner upgraded with a 87 89 cooler blower which is the set up in my car.

These are very high cycle switches which can be ordered at just about any temps.

I replaced the round harness connector with a flat type.

Also, the 1/4 NPT thread is a match for the metric female thread on the cooler.

Best,

Gerry
