I think you need what is called a hat. It mounts the floating rotor to the hub. I would not get the factory part due to the cost. There is a place in NJ USA that sells them at a very reasonable price. I am sure they would ship to the UK

This place can sell you the hat. http://www.vehiclecraft.com/

I am doing the 930 rotor upgrade also. This company also has there own rotors and hats. You can find the orginal ones for these turbo's but most parts shops don't know much about the items numbers.

Tom, provided the #s that you need. Unfortunately they have been NLA for many years. In addition the factory hats only bolt to the original factory 930 hub which is different from the 911 part. Your best bet is to get an aftermarket hat that will mate the factory spec rotors and your 911 hubs. There are many sources for the hats. But to my knowledge Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems is the only supplier of the correct rotors. The Brembo/AP rotors that Steve has are more expensive than the Coleman rotors that other vendors sell and are worth it

i understood you can use the 78-80 rotor assem. and just discard the spacer - oh well.

i can get the rotors (oe) real cheap here (uk) so was gonna find out about hats as well but i needed part numbers.

calipers are being shipped to doug at vci today, guess i'll be buying a bunch from him now, can't wait to get them back though.......

thanks as always.

Apparently, If you buy the rotor/hat assembly from vci, it is a better deal then just the hats and rotors seperately. Check there website. You best deal may be to buy these first as a unit, and then OE rotors later. There rotor is a direct replacement for the 78-80 rotor. The cheapest I can find these US is $219/rotor compared to there price of $249. Have you thought of getting these frozen? For this price, it may be worth it!

i can get oe rear rotors here for US$142!!! (i'm building on a budget here and need all the $'s saved i can get!)

i'm gonna get the rear calipers machined, front hats, all lines, hardware, and perhaps front 1/4" wheel spacers (extended studs??) and m/c from vci - vci may also need to mod the c/over lines on the rear calipers.

i'll use oe rotors and pads to start with to save $$$$.

doug there has been great and very patient with all my questions.

hows your install going???

I wanted to use the factory 79 930 rotors on my car. I talked to Steve W and asked him if his hats would fit the oe rotors. He said no. So I found Powertech in NJ and they said that there hat kit would fit the floating rotors. So that is the way I went.
The best price I found for the oe floating rotors was $250 each.

My calipers should be in soon. If you can get those prices, certainly do so. Those prices I quoted also are deep discount prices. At the dealer, those rotors are going for around $300

Hey Dickster,

The hats cost me $200 plus the dogs and the bolts. They kind of nick you on the bolts so you can buy your own. I paid $300 for the hat kit.

I used the VCI hats and the Porsche front discs - they fit perfectly. The downside is the floating set up is a little noisey at low speeds. If you don't need the floating set up and are prepared to pay a bit more than the original equipment is over here, I would go for a non-floating set up that Doug and others sell.
Hope this helps

Steve

steve,

thanks, i'll see what powertech come up with. but i really have been impressed with vci - i'll see how it goes with the machining etc.....

i'm not that bothered about the noise. keeping the cost down is priority though!

sorry for the ignorance but i have no idea what setup a 964rs has - what did you use??

I have the VCI floating rotor setup with S4/993 calipers in front and 930 calipers/rotors in the rear. I think I used PowerTech to machine the 930 rear calipers. PowerTech charged about half of what VCI wanted. I suspect that if PowerTech has a front hub solution for you, they might be cheaper than VCI on that as well.

If I was doing it again, I would find a solution that used factory non- floating rotors. When the Coleman rotors wore out I replaced them with Porsche ones. I got a good deal ($247ea) but that is quite a bit more than the non-floating rotors would cost.

I have to remove my track pads (Pagids) on the street because they are painfully loud - as in "causing actual pain" to bystanders. They aren't bad with street pads. I started swapping pads when I frightened a horse...

I like the noise the floating rotors make. Plus I like the racing technology. I would go the same route next time with a couple exceptions. I might go with Big Reds and I would source my own bolts for the dogs. All to save some bling (Thom I am trying like hell to keep up).

I was driving to lunch one day with a guy from work and he said car had never sounded worse - referring to the squeaks of the brakes and the clopping of the floating rotors. He had an aeronautical background so I told him my car was a bit like an SR-71 on the ground, the way the gas pours out of the wings.
Both machines work better at speed.
