Thumbs up

Tim,
My buddy is out so I'll meet you at Foreign Cars Italia along with Keith around 0800-0815. You got a ride now (assuming the weather gets better)!

Wow! Five inches of ice, snow, and sleet at my house and still coming down (as of 8:00 PM). The forecast is for another inch or two, but some melting tomorrow afternoon, and significant melting on Friday. Boy, I hope so. Work has been rough and I'm ready for some FUN!

Snow and Ice

I bet that a number of folks planning on coming to the Drive this Saturday are like me: NO POWER! We lost it last night at 2 AM and a neighbor who knows someone at the Co-Op says it will be 8-10 PM tonight at best before we have power restored.

I called a friend that lives on a road that is part of the planned route and he reports they got 7" of snow and then an inch or more of ice on top of that. Where this leaves the Drive, I am not sure. Let's see how much melting we really get this afternoon and tomorrow. On a positive note, it is forecast to be 45 degrees and clear on Friday and 50 degrees and clear on Saturday.

In any case, our web site for the Drive is down because we host it on one of our home office servers. I do have dial-up ability as long as the battery on this laptop holds up, so if you need to get in touch with me, please do so via the BB.

Exclamation

Trent or Hal,
One of you guys closer to the action (i.e. ice/snow) needs to make the call tomorrow afternoon on the Drive... The roads are all fine down my way but I'm sure it's a different story up near Blowing Rock.
Let us know! Hoping for sun.

The Plan

Todd,

Here is the plan as I see it. The best part of the Drive will be Route 194 from 211 to Boone. It is really terrific. It also has the potential to be "black ice".

I will call my friend that lives just off Rt.194 tomorrow afternoon and get a report as to its condition. If 194 is good, then the rest of the roads will be fine too. In my mind, that will tell us if we need to postpone or what.

Let's hold off on this weekend

Looks like Mother Nature is conspiring against us again this weekend. Electrical power is still off in lots of parts of the Charlotte area, and No sunshine yet to start any serious melting.

Also, it looks like the Parkway is closed and I just learned that Boone and Wautaga county uses SALT on the roads.

So, we think that it is best to POSTPONE the Drive to a future weekend. Anybody want to make a suggestion as to a future date? Next weekend, the 14th? After New Years? Let's hear from as many folks as possible.

how are things looking west of here? Things here in the triad are looking pretty good. Most of the roads are clean and the sun is melting things fast.

Hi everyone! I just had my power restored this morning, and I'm online from my girlfriend's house where we're clearing downed tree limbs today... I don't know about everyone else, but l don't think it's going to clear nearly enough today for me to take a chance with my 'baby' on icy roads (not to mention the salt exposure for you guys with non-galvanized cars). I'll 'go with the flow', but I vote for postponment until a later date...I'll check back online later this evening to see what the consensus is...Keith

I agree on waiting for better weather. You all know I don't mind the rain but I'm not up for hitting the salt in my "rust prone" early car. (bit your tounges scwdp followers! ) I'm sure the main roads in the mountains will be in good shape but the backroads are where the fun is. And the shady spots on those roads tend not to thaw as quickly.

how do the road's look out there?.. is it a go? I'm stuck here at work for another little bit so I really can't tell what the sun did today.

I'll be unable to go. I haven't had a shower in three days, and it doesn't look like I will have power or water for a few more.

Tom, halm and I all feel that tomarrow is too risky to take the cars out. There's a good chance we'll hit some black ice and some slush.

What dates would look better for the rest of you?

would be fine for dec 14 but after that I probably can't make it til after the new year since I'll be in WI for a week and I need to prepare for that.

I vote for after Christmas or the New Year. The forecast says a chance we could see another round of ice west of I-40 area mid week next week. Conditions may still be too dangerous on the back roads next weekend.

Was really looking forward to our drive tomorrow. Go back to work after 12 days off with a big dumb grin on my face but the weather gods have conspired against us.

To top it off I would have been a really cold camper as the parts for my heating system didn't come in.

I am pretty much game any weekend. Work will keep me in town through the holidays. So schedule it and I will be there.
