Engine number help

Hi -

I have no reason to believe this isn't the original motor for my '80 SC but I was hoping someone could at least help confirm it.

The number on the case is 6400504. The car is an early '80 with a build date of 10/79.

I think the first. 0 is supposed to be a D.

As per Bruce suggestion its a D vice a 0.

The 0 could also be a C as in 64Cxxxx ( 82 model).

Assuming its a D, 64D00504 is from an 83 model. The type is 930/16

The car was originally fitted with 630xxxx, type 930/07 or /09 (the VIN would confirm which one).

Sorry for the blurry picture but it's the best i could get. The "0" looks consistent with the other one next to it. I'm going to head back out and see if i can get a picture of the type.

You really need the type because it look like the boys on the line may have had a few too many

Just came across a post on another site, dude has a 1980 911 with engine serial number 6400313 with a car build date of 10/79. This seems to line up with what I have. I'll still try and get the engine type when I remove the AC but it won't be anytime soon.

Serial number 6400504 is correct for a 1980 SC, USA engine, type 930/07. The Serial numbers for SC engines changed from numeric to alpha-numeric in 1982 (i.e. went from 640 XXXX to 64C XXXX)

regards,
al

Another strike against the Red Book... but Wayne rebuild book (which I should have check) has the 640xxxx listed as 1980.
