Baffled...can't select reverse on G50
Just finished replacing master and slave clutch cylinders on my '88 G50. finished bleeding system and for some reason can't select reverse!! When i go from 5th to R it seems to hit something and force it into 4th...totally baffled. Any suggestions?
Clutch pedal feels good if that matters. Also, not sure if this matters, but rear is raised up on jacks on both sides supported at jack points in front of both rear wheels.

Check the coupler at the tunnel.
The rubber part of it tends to split. I replaced it with the Jwest plastic coupler. ![]()

OK thanks! I'll check that in the morning...seems like every project these days turns into 2....or 3...
Just took a look at it and it looks fine, what's odd is just playing around with the shifter and it's rapidly getting harder and harder to get into any gears other than 3 and 5...very odd. Nots sure if it matters but the weather has cooled off dramatically.

Reverse is on the far left and forward. Push past the 1st-2nd gate into the spring loaded gate for reverse.

Is it back on level ground where you're having the problem, or are you trying to shift it while it's still up on jack stands?

G50 shifting.......

88911coupe, Take note of the above post. The 5th gear is to the right side and the reverse is at the opposite side. From 5th gear you were having problem getting it to the neutral plane to go past the 1st-2nd and go to REVERSE? Tony |

OK...I'm officially senile. I was sitting in the car backwards trying to get the make sure the coupler was connected right after the work which I think had me confused...(its the best excuse I can come up with on short notice) Too many hours under the car sniffing brake fluid.
Not sure if there is an award for dumbest post of the year but maybe I'm in the running for it!!?? Sorry I wasted everyone's time! Actually this did pop into my head briefly about 3 a.m. when I woke up and was second guessing the problem. Next time I post I think I'll hold off for a few minutes...

To quote Homer Simpson, "That's funny because it's not me." Doh!
Glad you "fixed" your "problem." ![]() That being said, I think the biggest fumble is when people install brake pads inside out (friction material adjacent to piston and backing plate adjacent to rotor face) and then drive the vehicle that way. See, it can always be worse! |

Or calipers upside down and the bleeders trap air.
I once forgot the shift pattern on a 914. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't climb a hill. |

Deja Vu all over again.... That's why the 915 is superior to the g50. Weighs less too.

This is classic!
![]() Reverse to the left of 1st & up is sometimes dangerous. Let's say you're sitting at a stop light in neutral and you're daydreaming (actual daydreaming, not checking your fone....) and the light turns green but you're not ready. You can rush to select 1st, pull too far/hard left and go up into reverse. I've done it a few times myself. Good thing I have cat-like reflexes and good riddance to that pile of crap G50............ ![]()

From my perspective, Porsche held onto their antiquated balk-ring synchronizer system about 20 years longer than they should have. Retro some Borg Warner synchros into a 915, and I'll begin to listen. |

Hey Geary, it's my distaste of the sellers advertising their cars ( brainwashed ) as G50 this, G50 that....advertise the car....it's a Carrera...
Then the same tranny problems pop up.....a tranny is a tranny...depends on who is shifting it. Didn't mean to downplay the OPs problem....just my personal crusade to pump up the 915. Most of Porsche's significant racing history was won on a 915, or predecessor, or derivative there of... Last edited by Rich Gas; 11-24-2015 at 08:08 AM.. |

Similar thing happened to me when I bought my 911.
It was parked head in at a parking garage. Every time I tried to select reverse, the car would inch forward towards the abyss. I was sweating. I put my pride aside, and called the previous owner and he clarified the location of reverse for me. Trial by fire of owning a G50.

"When I bought my G50 Carrera, it would inch toward the abyss on its own, when attempting to put in gear. It was trial by fire owning a G50, I was literally sweating bullets." Said long time owner Jerome.
Thanks realgren....once again, mainstream media out of context quote. |
