Enjoying your build choices and direction very much. Great color choice too btw!

What was it about the fiberglass tailight housings that you didn't like and changed your mind about using them here?

I found another set that I liked a bit better, so were still using fiberglass just different ones. I didn't snap any pics but will try and find some from the vendor I purchased from. These actually have reflective silver coating and just seem to be better made.

Man keep hitting set backs with this thing. Front Rennline tow hook when bolted into bumper shock tube location sat way low in the fascia of the bumper. So we raised it and welded the mount a bit higher. Just need to fill in the notch under the tow hook with f-glass and re prep for paint.

The tow hook was the least of my problems. The rear fenders were a mess. The drivers side rear was done by using a Turbo fender flare. Remember this is a 82SC so the wide body was added on at sometime in the cars life. Anyway, when they did the passengers side they used a factory 930 quarter and graphed it in. No big deal right? Wrong. Both sides were lap welded The drivers side flare was positioned wrong and sits about 1" inboard to far. The passengers side is perfect. I knew they were lap welded but we didn't notice the passengers side was off spec until we added spacers on the rear wheels to get them flushed out. Were using 5/8 spacers and the passenger side is great BUT we noticed the drivers side was sticking out allot more. When we measured we found the difference was close to an inch.

Measurement taken from same location on chassis out to rear edge of rear fender

Of course we noticed this is after we had the car in final primer and ready to paint. Solution= either cut the rear fender flare out and add metal and bring it out to where its supposed to be, leave it alone, or in a perfect world, get an OEM complete rear quarter panel. I called Porsche and they wanted 2200 for a 930 or 965 rear quarter and there are none avail, even in Germany. Checked craigslist/eBay, didn't see anything. Posted a WTB ad in Pelican ads section and I get a hit from a Pelican who says he saw one on ebay. So I go back and double check again and sure as heck, there it is.

So now we have to cut off the old and weld the new on. I still have the passengers side problem of the lap weld. At this point I'm just hoping I can get 3-5 years out of it w/out any problems. Deal with it down the road. Other option is to cut it off and re butt weld on correctly or in a perfect world......

The slippery slope is killing me!

Change of plans. Not going to do the complete quarter panels. Just going to go in and fix the lap welds and do the butt welds.

Good plan. You'll have peace of mind knowing it was done right and you won't have to go back in and fix it.

the car is going to be painted Porsche paint to sample color Voodoo blue. The color appears close to Mexico blue in the sun and turns dark blue in the shade! Should be interesting and yes I have the Valentine One radar hard wired in due to the noise and color of this beast, LOL!

That is a nice color. Saw a gt3 rs with it, and it would be my choice for a rs.

passengers side rear quarter off. WOW, this is why you DO NOT lap weld. Glad were handling it now. They graphed a larger portion of another fender on this side as compared to just a flare on the drivers side. Its amazing what stories you uncover with these old cars once you dig in.

You would never know her dirty secrets from looking at these pics! Nothing against previous owner/seller. He did say it was done right and had steel flares. I hadn't enough experience to ask if they were butt welded or lap welded. I also bought sight unseen.

Evil lies in the dark. I suspect most "great cars" have something to hide. My car certinally had a huge share of hidden surprises.

Automotive archaeology is both fascinating and frustrating. There was some serious wiring translating I needed to do with my car this past summer.

I think the best way to deal with all the old problems is strip it and create all new ones.

What a shame............... Look at the bright side, now's the time to clean up that right rear fender well. Not surprising to see the pile of debris sitting on top of the oil tank is huge!

Also has provided easy access to remove the old thermostat and oil lines and get ready for the new ER stuff! Thanks to Elephant Racing. We had this set up on the first car and I pushed her pretty good on track and street in the HOT Florida summer days and would still be fine in the temp. department.

That new t-stat with the hex caps is the bomb! The original style with the slotted tooling is horrible & typically requires that you either grab the edges of the cap with a pipe wrench, or as I recently heard suggested (but haven't tried yet), use a thin hacksaw blade to relieve the seal rings under the cap.
