Tear down begins by Mike Bruns....
From Mike "Chris, it’s on the way apart, the cold leak down numbers looked pretty good at 8% on all 6, the cams appear to be one of 3 popular grinds as they aren’t marked, web 464/465 or a GE 40 or an Elgin 296/276 which can be what’s called an improved S or Mod S, I will figure the compression ratio next to see what we have there." Well with the help of Mike Bruns, we found that the engine is just fine and all the parts inside are beautiful. The engine only had 10K miles on the last rebuild (I didn't pay for). So while the motor is out, the engine bay is being cleaned up and will be painted Miami Blue.
Now the fun stuff. We are going to build a 3.6! GT3 crank,GT3 oil pump.custom pauter rods, custom JE pistons, X treme head work, twin plug, 50MM PMOs. I will try to offset the cost a bit by selling off my efi kit (sold), my mint SC 3.0 crankshaft and also my rods/JE 100MM pistons. My cylinders are good and will be used in the new motor. We also will be adding some bling to the engine as all applicable parts will be powder coated and we will be use a carbon engine shroud, block off plates and fuse panel to dress her up a bit. Mike seems pretty confident that the motor will be putting down close to 300 WHP. I CANT WAIT TO SEE THE RESULTS! Also suspension. I bent my passengers side spindle when I hit the curb which also bent my wheel. So I had to find a new boge strut which I did. I will be sending these out to Clint at Rebel racing to have the spindles raised since my car is lowered. He will also refurbishand convert to bilstein style and basically restore it to new. The new one will be raised and gusseted and converted. I also ordered Clints DZUG X brace for the front end of the car (see image). While the struts are out I'm going to have the brake calipers powder coated and stenciled" PORSCHE" script on them. So I guess this is part #2 of the build. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1525210461.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1525210461.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1525210461.jpg |
Ok so the carbon shroud came in today. Man this engine is going to be something! Couldn't help but add a lil bling to it.

Our new struts/spindles/bump steer kit came in today. So big thanks to Clint at Rebel Racing for this set up. I hit a curb in Tampa and bent my front wheel and spindle on the passengers side Boge strut. So we sourced a new boge strut from Ebay and sent them to Clint at rebel to be converted to Bilsteins.
This was done so we could raise the spindle 32mm. I guess the Boge spindles can only be raised 19MM if I remember correctly. We also did new Bilstein sport strut inserts and the RSR adjustable bump steer kit. The spindle mounts and struts were gusseted. New brake line supports, shortened wiper seals and lower bump steer supports were added then they were painted John Deer green. The rest of the front suspension parts will arrive tomorrow. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528316741.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528316741.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528316741.JPG |
Front suspension parts coming in now. Just need to get the rear suspension $$$ together (very slippery slope). Still have the D Zug style front X Brace from rebel racing coming. Thanks again to Clint at Rebel for the parts and service.

Ahh! So jealous of all that shinny new suspension stuff! Enjoy the build!

New front caliper pistons and all new seals for the brakes. The Pagid pads are still in great shape so will use them. Have to source the rear brake piston today. Powder coater couldn't get the bolts out of the calipers so he coated them all together. Not to happy about that. Should have done that myself. Front A arms are also done. Shame we have to mess them up to weld on the U tabs for the Tarret front sway bar.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528483888.JPG *Notice one of the caliper pistons is different?? Came in a bag with same part #s and is the same diameter. I assume it doesn't matter?? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528483888.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528483888.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528483888.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1528483888.JPG |
The lone piston that looks different is actually the one that is like the originals. The other three with a solid center and "button" in the middle look like early S pistons. But as long as they're the correct diameter, it shouldn't really matter.
Powdercoating guy probably couldn't get the caliper bridge bolts apart because he doesn't have a proper ribe-style socket bit. These calipers are pretty easy to disassemble since they are actua nut-and-bolted assemblies versus the 930 or later Brembos that have bolts threaded into the aluminum caliper body. The Brembos can often be a real bear to separate Good luck finding the rear pistons. I recall DRACO A5OG (Jim) having difficult sourcing pistons for his Carrera rear calipers and ended up getting them from the UK http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/863602-3-2-rear-brake-caliper-pistons-source.html http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/926052-3-2-rear-42mm-caliper-pistons-product-review.html Sucks that you gotta mess up the A-arms to cut off the original through-body rubber mounts and weld on the Tarett drop link U-brackets. |
Thanks KTL, I think your correct. They sent 3 "S" pistons. Funny thing was they came in the same part # bags. So Im working with Pelican to get it correct. Also if you go to the part on the Pelican site it shows the pictures of the correct piston, then the last 2 pictures are the "S" style, so Im not sure if they changed them or what????
Front pistons, look at the last 2 pictures https://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/smart/more_info.cgi?pn=SIC-351-425-00&SuperCat=Y&SVSVSI=798&catalog_description=Calip er%20Piston%2C%20Stainless%20Steel%2C%20%34%38mm%2 0for%20Front%20A%20Calipers Found the rears at PMB , Pelican doesn't offer them and pointed me in this direction http://www.pmbperformance.com/catalog/item/8778691/6473414.htm |
Mike Bruns started blasting the case clean today. Man it looks brand new! See it compared to the un blasted half.
