Wow, now the fun begins, outside of a couple of broken bolts that mount the turbo to the exhaust, and muffler thats rusted through everything looks to be in good order. Looks like I will have to fab up the exhaust and flange to run up the right side of the car. All the bonnets and down pipes come out that side and there is alot more room for the run. Time to start welding everything up. I have seen flanges for sale somewhere for the turbo mount I will keep looking. If you guys know a link I'd appreciate a post.

I will send them out when I can there are 22 pages in all I will make it into a pdf.
It expains how to modify your dist. and recommends raising the fuel pressure to 5.7 bar to 6.2 or more if needed.

After inspecting the Rayjay turbo it looks like a rebuild is in order, there is play in the shaft. Any suggestions on who to use or where rebuild parts can be found. I am almost ready to post pictures, the exhaust cross pipe is being fabricated out of stainless, and am waiting for a few more pieces of the puzzle to arrive. I had to install an electric Tilton oil pump for my drain as I could not mount it high enough for a natural flow, now I can pump it where ever I want. I am thinking the oil tank. I am considering the throttle body for mounting the cold start valve for enrichment sort of like a throttle body injection, any thoughts. It's amazing how much of the Bae kit is useable in the 914 the chrome intake pipes look nice running up inside the trunk and are tucked over far enough to the side to retain useable trunk space.

depending upon what kind of turbo you are using, ebay usually you can find rebuild kits for a reasonable price.

Turbo city in orange has a complete rebuild kit for around $175, or they will completely overhaul it for you for $350.

IIWY i would take it apart and see what it worn.
How much play does it have? it should have a little bit, just not too much. Around .004" axially and about .0015" radially is good. You have to try and move both ends at the same time to measure it though, otherwise it wil lrock and show more clearance than you have.

You can shim the axial thrust play really easily, the radial clearance is harder to fix because you have to pressin a new bearing and/or replace the shaft.

NOTE: be sure to mark the impellers so you can index them back correctly. Otherwise the balance could be upset.

It moves up and down pretty good, I had someone look at it who knows turbos, he said it needs to be rebuilt.
Sammy did you get your manual and does it open up for you ok.
Also are you running the Bae kit like Kurt in it's stock form. I've assembled all the parts for a suter install but would like to hear how the stock kit has worked for you, I love the simplicity of the kit, does the pop off valve continually bleed boost on and off throttle or only off throttle.

Dave,
I will be using a k26 with my kit, I have a rayjay that appears to be in good shape. Maybe we could trade?!

Enjoy

I got the manual, thank you very much. I wish I had it before I drilled a hole in my lower valve cover, oh well. it is now hooked up the way the manual describes.
My system is completely stock but it does have a wastegate.
I don't know what boost setting I have yet or how well it runs. I've only taken it around the block a couple times and only got on boost one time just for a second. I wanted to get the engine warmed up before trying that and I'm fighting a bad alternator. The place that rebuilt it two years ago just called and agreed to rebuild it again for free so I can pick it up this afternoon.
Problem is I won't have another day off from work until April so I won't be able to play with it for a while.
i don't have a muffler on the wastegate pipe so it is very noticeable when the wastegate opens. I didn't hear anything until around 4000 rpm in second if that's any indication. i may install a turbo spring loaded check valve that only opens at a pre-set pressure.it does bleed off a very small amount of air but it is supposed to keep the waste gate completely closed until it reaches the opening pressure. supposedly that helps with quicker spool up by preventing exhaust pressure to bleed off before the boost pressure is reached.
I have a hoobs switch ready to install but I think that's down the road a little after I hook up a second O2 sensor and an air/fuel ratio meter. I don't think I'll need it until I increase the boost pressure over 5 or 6 psi. Up to that point the CIS is supposed to be able to compensate just fine.

What kind of boots are you using where your pipes go through the sheet metal? Looks very clean.

I am using roof plumbling vent stack seals, I use them all the time for ****, they cost about 4 bucks and come in many sizes. I to am thinking of using the stock pop off valve with a waste gate, but as long as I've gone this far I might as well by a new one. I am waiting to see what suter does next, He's the guini pig on this install. I have extra covers with fittings if you need one. Let me know how it runs, after I get mine plumbed together I am dropping the engine to set the rockers and check the head studs, replace boots and injector sleeves. then hope to have it on the road in May.

Here is a shot of the back of the throttle body, I am considering placing the CSV where you see the circle indents.

My car starts right up without any hesitation but i have it running rich on purpose until I get the O2 circuit hooked back up and sorted out. My header didn't come with a bung for the sensor and I'll have to pull it all a apart to weld one in. last thing I want is some slag going through the turbine.

I ran the AAV line just like the pictures except my 1980 throttle body is slightly different.
What year is your engine?

Can someone tell me what the two little inch-long stalks that stick out of the back of the throttle body are? They have little flathead machine screws clising them off, and are barely visible in chappy's picture above (one looks like it has a red cap on it).

I found that one of the cap screws had fallen off mine last night, causing a turbo leak. Anyone know what they do?

The two you mention above go to the disconnected EGR lines. The capped yellow one is the old decel valve connection. All three should be capped for a turbo application.

page one of this post has the picture with all connections labeled.

Very nice install.

BTW I took the SC out for it's first real shakedown today after installing the rebuilt alternator.
1st gear is a waste at full throttle, it goes by too fast.
2nd is pretty much the same, as soon as boost hits hard (it comes on at 3500 and levels off at 3700 rpm) redline comes right after.
Third is when it starts getting fun as i can feel the boost longer and it is really is obvious.
Haven't hit 4th yet on boost, too much traffic around and I don't really like to hotrod on the street that much. I need to find wide open places with no one else around or a race track.
boost is rock steady at 5 psi for now until I get a good A/F ratio gauge installed, then it's gradually up to 7 or 8, that's prolly as high as I'll go without an intercooler.
Cool..he he......

It isn't killer fast but is waaaay different than the stock 3 liter.
