I had very little experience with Porsches when I decided to rebuild my 3.0. Put it together with a lot of help from folks on this forum and better than a year later it still purrs like a kitten and doesn't leak a drop of oil.

Hmmm... maybe my interior RS style carpets. A lot of trimming and sewing of the edge binding. A lot of time and love was put into that cramped little car. I find a new interior is one of the more satisfying DIY projects you can do as the results are there every time you get in. Still not technically done...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A nice balance of ultra lightness and volume. Kind of a in-between OEM quiet and race car. No harshness, and very sporty yet classy looking. I now have the perfect interior IMHO. (a pro did the seats, but I helped guide the design) ![]()

Fixing a nagging engine oil leak.
I pulled the engine and tightened the rocker shaft end bolts to the preferred higher torque value. I couldn't get my torque wrench into the tight space, but a buddy of mine who is an ace vintage motorcycle mechanic told me to file a notch in the handle of my standard wrench handle that was 12 inches from the socket. Then apply force to the handle by pulling downward with a fish-weighing scale, with the hook in the notch, to the appropriate "pounds." Worked like a charm and the engine hasn't leaked since! I did all this, including pulling and re-installing the engine by myself!

Did an engine swap (with while-you're-in-there work) in my DD years ago. Not complicated - a lot of work, but essentially simple - but it was very satisfying.

Rebuilt my brakes. I'd always been freaked out about working on brakes because the stakes are rather high if they fail.
But it was an easy process and not too bad. Of course, like most posting in this thread, I owe a ton to the members here for the encouragement, guideance and advice and to our host for the technical articles and ample supply of the correct parts at fair prices. Happy wrenching, all! |

Everything related to the Porsche has been rather straight forward because it is a very straight forward car. (Some things might be a pain but they are a straight forward pain!)
Biggest DIY accomplishment was the first engine I built when I was very young. A 215 cid Olds aluminum V8. Pretty much nothing was stock in it. Custom JE pistons, custom cam, hand modified and welded intake, self modified Holley carb, early small block chevy rods shaved .100", FWD Buick V6 water pump, oddball high volume oil pump, Volvo yalve train, Buick 300 aluminum heads, custom oil pan, custom oil pickup, and on and on... (That engine is still in the garage.) Didn't have any guidance on it except for lots of studying any book I could get my hands on. I replaced the 327 in my car with it and the weight reduction made the car AWESOME. 2050 pounds and it out accelerated and cornered most anything you see on the road including the Porsche. (Porsche brakes still KILL!!!) As far as a Porsche DIY episode... That would have to be the "Rubber Explosion™" incident where I went through the engine because of rough running and in the process of replacing cracked intake gaskets I also discovered the intake insulators, the fuel lines, and pretty much every vacuum line was toast. On top of that the DME needed to be resoldered because of a few bad connections. Once it was done it ran like new. Pretty straight forward but pretty irritating.

Rebuilt 1st and 2nd gear in my SC's transmission. Couldn't have done it without help from John Walker, Matt Monson, and many others here on the board.

So far, and Porsche related?
Removing the aftermarket alarm that was disabling my car and getting it to run again. ![]() ![]() Currently trying to beat that by rebuilding my engine.
