Update:
Spoke to Tim at Ollie's Machine Shop: Good News, Case is Straight, they will clean the Squirters and Deck it. :D Bad GOOD News, Cylinders are 3/1000th, out of spec, Max spec is 1.5/1000th. Now I see how specs of debris can get in and score the walls of the cylinder. Well, those cylinders did run over 300K miles, not bad.' He will speak to his specialist ( uncle ) to see what options I have. So it is looking closer to 3.4L  |
LN Engineering can make up some awesome Nickasil cylinder and pistons. I believe they can bump displacement and comp w/o any head modification. I love spending OPM.
Did you think about twin plugging? WYAIT thinking here... |
Hey M,
I appreciate it, yeah, will try to keep her single plug 98MM if need be. Not planning to track her anytime soon or in the future :D |
Send those cyls to EBS for boring & plating to ~98mm with some 9.8:1 fitted ~98mm CP pistons.
|
^^^ that is what I was thinking :-)

Not sure if we're talking same-same here. Boring and re-plating a set of cylinders is just over $230 each plus shipping
Cylinder Plating Prices | Cylinder Modifications | Piston Coatings | Diamond Honing | U.S. Chrome Corporation of Wisconsin Cylinder Repair Company So that's ~$1400 to have your Mahle cyls resized. A set of Nickies is $3740 and you need pistons on top of that for another $1000. You could also have EBS strip and re-plate them to stay ~95mm and complement your existing pistons, assuming the pistons are Mahle and still in serviceable condition. |
Update:
:D So, I had a long talk with Tim at Ollie's. He spoke to his specialist and according to him, the max wear limit to the cylinders are 8/1000th's so it his opinion that, if just for street/daily I can just clean, re-hone and throw the existing cylinders back on. He re-mic'ed them all again and they were 2.5-3/1000th's. Down Side: He said when cold it may be a bit noisy/clanky. My Mahle Pistons are in Serviceable Condition :D I asked if he could bore/hone to 98MM, He quickly responded that my cylinders are in fact Nickasil, As Master KTL mentioned above, they can bore to 98MM but it will require the cylinders to be re-plated. I am waiting for EBS to confirm if they can Bore/Hone my cylinders or do an exchange to 98MM. |
Seems to me that if it wasn't noisey/clanky before then it shouldn't be any more/less clanky now. You haven't really done anything to increase bore... right ?
|
^^^
And keep in mind that Jim is about 100 years old by now, so with his diminished hearing situation, I don't think a little cold clacking would be much of a concern! :D |

Your right...I was thinking more along the lines of when boring it, to install sleeves for stock 95mm pistons due to the block having 300K on it; if the pistons are still the originals[/I], I would consider picking up a complete set of used low milage ones, and then install a new set of high quality rings...Of course, new cylinders, pistons, rings, rods, etc. would be the best way to go but expensive ay...As mentioned previouly, I would tend to think that a lot of these suggestions may depend on just how many miles a year Jim will put on it per year, including just how long he plans on keeping his car. Do it.................
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1484930080.jpg But in all seriousness, if they're well within wear spec? I'd stick with them and keep on truckin'. Sounds like they're in great shape. Just "deglaze" the bores with a super light hone or do the red scotchbrite trick in soapy hot water. Either helps the new rings break in by establishing fresh crosshatch (honing) or revealing old crosshatch (scotchbrite) by removing the embedded ring material. Equally important are the ring lands/grooves in the pistons. Need to put a new ring in there and see how much gap there is. Not the typical gap you set. The gap/clearance above the ring measured with a feeler gauge. Not going to speak for Jim but I do know he puts a lot of miles on the car and doesn't hesitate to do so. I think he bought the car with ~186K and is darn proud he's got 300K. Pretty sure he looks forward to many many many more miles. As we've seen from what he found inside, these engines can go for hundreds of thousands of miles without wearing down to the point they're scrapped. Just some things like valve guides, head studs or chain tensioners need some attention during that time. |
"Luke, I am your Father" :-)
Update: Case & Rods finished being shipped today. Cylinders to EBS to swap for the 98's!!! Ordered 98 Pistons 2 weeks ago WOOHOOOOOOOOO! Ollie's decked my case took 3/1000ths off so definitely going 0.50 shim case to cylinder. Oh yes Master K, I will be verifying the CP rings to insure proper gaps |
Good luck.....bet you gots the Jones bad....
|
Oh man, you know it Brother, Stuck at home watching freaking crazy news and crazier Bowl LI, wow
I hope I can remember how the engine goes back together after all this time :-( Got to learn clutch play again, oh the joy. |
|
Almost All Back!!!
90% back, just need my 3.4 Pistons and Cylinders :D
