Has anyone ever thought to use the bumper "smile" with the fiberglass cap to mitigate the shelf effect?

Could someone (Wavey?) post some pictures of the back of the front bumper cap. I really would like to see what it looks like prior to ordering, particularly in the area of the raised inner lip that would (hopefully) be used to mount the Ruf rubber lip
Alternatively they could email pics to me directly at holyoak@brandeis.edu Thanks Todd

For the front lip spoiler thingamajigger, I got some black PVC conveyor belting from McMaster-Carr.
www.mcmaster.com And type in the number 6001K808 in the find/search field. Then click on Catalog page. I initially bought the Black PVC 4" wide, 0.17" thick belt. It seems slightly thinner than i'd like. I think i'm going to get another length of the 0.21" belting, which is closer the the thickness of my existing OEM Porsche rubber front spoiler. I'll post a picture of the how the belting looks when I get home. The outer surface is kinda shiny, but looks okay. Price is not bad at all. $1.27/ft.

Also, be sure to secure the fiberglass piece about every 3-4 inches. Since the edges of those pieces are not rolled the weight of the unit will pull it down. This will cause waves in the fiberglass at each mounting point. I used the industrial rubber strips from McMaster-Carr. I used the 2" wide strip attached to the lip on the bottom of the front bumper cap. This left less than 4" clearance from the ground when installed. The gardening stuff won't work. It is too brittle and i doubt it will sustain air flow at over 100 mph. I'll try and take some pics this weekend to show what I did.

I don't have my parts yet, but I think it would be a good idea to put an aluminum backing strip under or behind the fiberglass (sandwich the glass). This will reinforce the bumper to fender attachment, and for the rubber lip, it will help to prevent cracking of the glass if you run over something.

Hey Todd,
Here's the only pic I've taken so far where you can see the bottom edge. There is only the horizontal surface that wraps under from the front - there's no vertical lip at the back edge, up or down, where you'd attach another rubber lip. In a "section view", the contour just comes down from the front, curves at the front bottom, and goes straight back toward the rear. There's a tiny bit of flair toward the ground about halfway back, but it's essentially horizontal. No lip. However I would imagine Brad could make you one with a lip, since he's pretty much making these to order - you might ask him. Quote:

Here's those pictures of the conveyor belting if anybody cares.
![]() ![]() It's sturdy but flexible. I still think i'll try the .21 thickness or get some of the other stuff mentioned that McMaster-Carr carries. That'd be great if Paul could show us a picture of his version of the lip.

Has anyone seen the pictures from the latest exellence mag? You can see there is a rubber strip between the bumper cap and the body (fenders). Does anyone know where to get such a rubber strip? I have searched a couple of places and the closest I have seen was on JC Whitney.

Paul,
On your front bumper you have two inlets on each side in the fog light opening. What are you using those for and how was it constructed? I have considered something similar so I can run a fog light and a brake duct on each side. Thanks for the help! Brian BTW, Bill, the parts coming from BW now do not have a turned up lip on the back side to sandwich the lip on to. Last edited by ipapilot; 04-04-2003 at 04:27 PM.. |

The Shaw pieces do have a lip but it is turned down for the air damn attachment. It will need reinforcing though as others have done, cuz it isn't much. I weighted all the parts that came off today but haven't had a chance to accurately weight what is going back on. Here is what came off. Front and rear bumpers with shocks weighted in at 78#.
Here is what is going on: Two small shocks going back on with the front nerf bar which is steel. That adds up to 14#. Back heat sink will be aluminum and around 5#. Shaws two pieces I would think hit less than 20# together. Makes the change about 38/40# lighter, may be a bit more. But I'll get chance to be more specific on Monday. Anyone else weighted the parts as they go? ![]() ![]() |

Can someone who has changed to these ruf sytle bumpes do me a favor and measure the distance from the ground to the bottom of the front bumper cap (i.e. front clearance) and their front fender well height.
I'm thinking of changing bumpers on my 930 but am worried about not being able to get out of my driveway ![]() Thanks, Berardino

As you guys can tell, Bill's RUF rubber spoiler is much nicer than my DIY job. But for $20 it gets the job done.
ipapilot, I made the ducting you commented on out of fiberglass. On the passanger side there are two inlets, one for the oil cooler and one for the brake duct. On the drivers side it is just the brake duct. I do not hook up the brake ducts for street driving.
