Can we start putting together a shopping list of the mods needed to recreate these cars?

This is an awesome thread! Great stuff guys!

I'd love to fit the RUF Yellowbird front/rear bumpers on my turbo body cab later on.

"The look" to compliment the HP

I should do a better photoshoot... but my winter suspension refresh turned into a 3.6 transplant and RUF look bumpers and new wheels.

Conversion.... (nothing to it...how far you want to take it is up to you. Do you want a milded conversion? Or a wilded converstion that includes the engine! )

Basic conversion A:

Front and rear bumpers.

Basic conversion B:

Front and rear bumpers with nerf bars for mild crash protection.

The bumpers we sell come with a grill, or you can fabricate your own with expanded metal or a plastic rear decklid. Our front bumper cost the same w/ or w/o the grill.

The nerf bars are just warm fuzzies if you ask me. If you want something that works better, you're gonna have to fabricate your own. I haven't gotten around to installing the bumpers on my Carrera yet, but when I do, I'll fabricate something a little more serious than the available nerf bars. I'm not worried about the car when I'm driving it, but the lady of the house wants to drive the car! With the turbo engine...I'm afraid she's gonna need the extra protection

You'd need:

F/R Bumpers
Ruf mirrors
RuF 17" Wheels
Ruf Interior
Ruf suspension
Ruf/930 Turbo brakes
3.4L 7.5:1 P&C's
ARP fasteners
GT2-EVO CAMs
Titanium Retainers
Turbo valve springs
Turbo valve guides
Turbo valves
Your choice of Nerosist liners/head, or C2Turbo Head gaskets for a better seal at high boost
Twin plug *optional*
Twin Turbo Shorty Headers & muffler/exhaust to suit
Twin Turbo intercooler
Twin Garrett T3 "Super 60" Turbos
Modified BOSCH Motronic (MAP pressure sensing electronics) - That's what RuF used!
Bigger Injectors
Twin 44mm/46mm Wastegates
G50 or G50/50 5 Spd G/box
High spec clutch to transfer all this glorious power to the transaxle!!!

That should probably do it

The RuF CTR1 Yelloybird put out ~460HP. With the above setup, you'll probably be at about ~600HP

IMO, probably best to start with an '87-'89 3.2 Narrow-body Carrera (G50 box) and build it up from there

Thanks Merv. Any idea on how the suspension differed?

Paul;

Here's the list:

Start with a narrow body 911, '86 or 'later. Use an '88, if you want the correct year for a replica. Add the following bits....

Bodywork;

aluminum front fenders
aluminum trunk lid
Ruf rear fender extensions
Ruf rocker panels to match above
shaved roof rain gutters
Ruf front and rear bumpers, front bumper lip
body color rear tag lights, rear reflector
Ruf oil cooler for front bumper with grille and lines
oil tank door in right rear fender
Matter cage, tied to car at B pillars, padded
fire extiguisher mounted to Matter cage behind right seat
NACA ducts in rear fenders, altough most CTRs didn't have them
modifications to car structure at sides of engine bay to accomodate intercoolers
Ruf gas tank (larger, no spare)
gas heater in the trunk (car has headers)
delete most trunk trim
Ruf shock tower brace, welded in
Ruf badges, front and sides
Carrera-style tail, may have longer rubber lip with flatter profile
Ruf fiberglass door mirror, 935-style, left side only
H4 headlights, Euro rear light lenses

Suspension;

larger torsion bars (can't remember the size, but the car is STIFF)
22mm/20mm stabilizer bars, rear shaped for trans clearance
Ruf-valved Bilstein shocks
330 mm Ruf cross-drilled rotors, Ruf 44/36 and 42/36 calipers, appropriate spacers and pads
Ruf 8x17 and 10x17 wheels
Dunlop Denloc tires, 215/45/17 and 255/40/17
Adjustable TRW brake proportioning valve, mounted behind front seats with cheesy leather boot to hide lines

Drivetrain;

Ruf CTR engine (no substitutions here, please)
Ruf 5- speed gearbox, 60% LSD, shifter, pressure plate, clutch and cable
Ruf muffler
Ruf adjustable boost valve, mounted between seats, with cheesy leather boot
Ruf fabricated sheet aluminum oil tank, ahead of right rear wheel
stiffer motor mounts
Ruf gas pedal linkage

Interior;

Recaro seats
2" four-point red cam lock seatbelts, no brand name visible
Ruf gauges
additional indicator lights on dash, either side of the tach, one yellow and one red
switches for front and rear fog lights, heated window
Ruf steering wheel
Ruf floor mats
lightweight carpet, trimmed with edging for rest of interior
'74-style plain door panels, no lid for door pockets
manual windows and locks
no A/C
delete glovebox door and passenger sun visor
black headliner
period Blaupunkt radio and front door speakers
nifty Ruf stickers (5) for engine compartment info
nifty Ruf VIN plate and door sticker

...and other stuff I have forgotten. It would be much cheaper to buy a used one. There are a few floating around and one is bound to come up for sale sooner or later.

Have fun,
JR

Holy smokes. No one is really serious about building an exact replica right? (although the above two posts are good to have on this thread)

I'm building mine in the spirit of the original. Turbo engine, suspension mods that most of us are familiar with, and body work (limited to front and rear bumpers). Seats (and interior) will be left stock as the lady of the house likes the cushy leather seats (maybe I'll sneak a race bucket int here when she's not looking )

Sorry, I don't. I've read that the torsion bars are standard Carrera units, but I always thought they were similar to the turbo's of that era.

LOL! I didn't realise we were talking an EXACT replica, otherwise I would have suggested the same.

IMO, you can get far superior components now for turbocharging a motor than what RuF had available to them back in the day I mean, who in their right mind would use a pair of K26's for a TT setup these days?!? You could get far better performance and top end HP using a pair of Garrett's (BB or non-BB)!

Urethane

Souk,

Did you ever get a sample version of RUF CTR bumpers in a urethane version?

What is your take. Please comment.

What a great read. Very informative indeed.

Can anyone tell me whether RUF or any other supplier sell the custom 9" flared rear quarters to accommodate the 10" RUF rims?

Would the 10" rims fit under standard Carrera flares?
