935 Race Mirrors… Lets Discuss
I’m aware of the visibility issues with these mirrors so let’s discuss the other factors. I have the following questions:
1) Who has the best price without sacrificing quality? 2) Is the extra cost of Carbon Fiber worth the price difference? 3) Please describe the installation process. 4) What’s the best/proper way to fill the old mirror holes in the door panel? 5) Will a simple small area paint blend due or should you re-paint the entire door after filling the holes? Appreciate the advice. |

Me too...
I've always had a thing for these mirrors. Nothing can be as bad as a "flag" mirror.

I was told that they suck for street driving. Lane changing, backing up and blind spot. Not much vision
They are ment for race cars. Is someone there ? I decided not to put them on my car. But they are cool. To fill the hole. Weld a fender washer in to cover the hole. The trick. Weld a length of coat hanger to the washer to pull the washer into place. Plus you can hold the washer in place with the wire. While you weld with the other hand. BTDT.

mirrors
I have these on my 930....only problem is right side visibility. If you are prone to quick moves in traffic you put yourself at risk!

I have not put mine on yet but I bought them from RUF because I was told they were the only ones that used convex mirror. I was told the other brands used a flat mirror which had very limited view. I don't know if this is true but when I have someone hold them up I can see ok. Obviously I haven't tried them on the road.

GT Racing (800-797-2911) has them for $220 in fiberglass, or $295 in carbon fiber. They also have complete fiberglass or carbon fiber doors with the 935-style mirrors already molded on. At $1150 for the FG and $1360 for the CF, they are a bit spendy. Although, you would lose a TON of weight, and wouldn't have to modify your original doors.

piedogger ,
How much are they from RUF? I have heard that the convex mirror does indeed help.

I use them, but I only have the driver side on now. They are supposed to be attached with bolts through the window frame. I couldn't bring myself to drill the aluminum frame, so I used winshield glue, works perfect. I also cut a convex mirror to use, otherwise they are worthless in city traffic.
BTW the Factory also glued them on the 964 Cup cars. GeorgeK |

935 mirrors
Hello,
I have had the 935 mirrors on my car since 1984 and I love them! They work great if you ajust them correctly. As with the race cars they are adjusted to your blind spot. I have had the flat and convex mirror glass, the convex does work a little better but the flat mirror works reasonably well. The mirror glass is the same as the aftermarket Sebring mirrors sold by several racing and accessory catalogs and suppliers. I mounted mine by drilling two small holes through the window frame, counter sinking the holes, 3 inch machine screws, and epoxying nut plates on the inside of the mirror housing, and using very dark window tint on the inside of the vent glass to camoflage the exposed inside of the mirror housing. They have never come loose in nineteen years. To me the added cost of carbon fibre is unnecessary as it shows the pattern of the fibre after it's painted over time. I got my mirrors from A.I.R. for $150.00 for the set back in 1984. I would attach a picture if I was techno savvy enough. If you would like to see a picture, look on the Early 911S registry message board under Ventura Autofest pictures or Breakfast meeting pictures. Mine is the aubergine 73RS-T with grill lights. Hope this helps, email me if you would like. All the best! Roger Grago R Gruppe #2.7 73 RS-T 70 2.4MFI VW BUS |

If I remember corectly my RUF mirrors were around $400.00. They came with adhesive to glue them on and a sticker to stick to the inside of the quarter glass to block out the mirror internals.

I have a pair of fiberglass units I want to sell. I will post an ad w/pictures later today if anyone is interested. One mirror has what appears to be an old Automotion part # sticker w/date 4/30/92.

I also agree with Rogers comments about the mirrors and mounted mine the same way.

How did everybody fill the door holes where the old mirrors mounted? Did you re-paint the entire door or just blend the area?

I installed mine when I was having the whole car painted, so it was just a matter of welding the holes shut, prepping for paint and shooting the car.

l wish l`d tuned into this site three days ago before l drilled into my car...l just bought a set of carbon fiber 935 mirrors (match my carbon door handles and splitters) from Peter @ Rennsport for $310.00.l had to rework the inside surfaces with a dremel to get a good fit to the wing window area and the mounts were not lined up to allow drilling through the window frame.l reworked those also. The carbon mat visible through the clear is not as uniform as l`d like, but they look okay. They`re really race parts l think.l think now that l should have gone with the RUF mirrors for the quaility, not ot mention the mounting system. They do look very cool though.
