The other Cannucks may be flying. Im only an 8 hour drive and by the time I clear security, covid checks and actually get in the air, flying and driving are almost the same time and I avoid the metal petri dish. Was looking forward to the drive as Id planned a loop down into MD to visit some relatives.

Not to throw a stick in the spokes, but is it possible to find out if all the participants in the 9/9-9-10 class have had their covid shots. I've got two daughters both pregnant, that I would like to come home to without the worry about catching the virus from one of the less educated participants. I have had both my shots for the record. Let me know if there is a way to canvas the group. |

We resume by 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM. You can stay longer as most people did last time. The next day starts the same schedule. Two (2) days are not long enough to cover the subjects in details. There are several good places to go for lunch nearby. Or buy your take out lunch and have it in the class room. I encourage people to come dressed in their work clothes and participate in the class activities. Blue jeans and t-shirts and sneakers are ideal. Travel safely and see you soon. Tony |

I havent read all 29 pages of this thread but will soon. I am tempted to jump on one of the openings for the 20th but will be in Minneapolis for work that week.
Tony-Is this something you plan to do again in the future? I would be interested in a two day session in the spring. What a great idea by they way--while I dont expect to be building a flat 6 anytime soon, I think this is a great tool to learn about the car. |
Want to give another HUGE shout out to Tony - the two day experience was incredibly invaluable. I've read forum posts, read Wayne's book, watched countless YouTube videos and nothing can compare to the hands on experience, troubleshooting problems together, and learning Tony's incredible tricks.
I wouldn't hesitate to embark on my own project now and am wishing I had a spare engine core laying around to work on... |
Just completed the class this last Thursday and Friday with a great group of guys. It is immediately apparent Tony spent a great deal of time setting up the room, his tools etc so it would be effective for learning.
The entire two days is hands on breaking down the engine, and then building it back up. He strongly encourages everybody to participate and get wrench time. Tony is exceptionally creative in making his own low cost tools used for the build and he happily shares this with his students. Being a visual learner, the class really cleared up virtually all the questions I had on the build process. One of the most valuable things I learned was on cam timing. He was using the digital cam timing gauge that one of the Pelican members designed and sold on the forum. I purchased it some time ago but had no clue how to use it going in, but now feel very confident on the procedures for using it. All of the guys/students were great and we had a lot of fun taking turns, telling stories and learning about the inner workings of these engines. In closing, I just wanted to say a HUGE Thank You... to Tony for all the effort he puts into this course. You can tell this is his passion and he wants to share it with other enthusiasts. |

Tony is a great instructor. I also attended this past Thursday and Friday, (8AM -5PM) it was amazing to demystify the workings and relationship of all the various parts in our flat 6 engines. Tony's energy and enthusiasm was delightful, and yes, everyone took turns disassembling under his careful eye and assembling sometimes utilizing devices & tools Tony made himself out of simple & easily available materials. Ingenious, really. (David B. said it well.)
Now, one step closer to re-building an engine if and when the time comes. I drove off into the sunset ( away from actually ) Friday evening, listening to the 3.0 and thinking about how everything worked in unison, harmonically, like clockwork, making it's lovely sound. |
I will echo all the other comments about the class. A great time and an exceptional value. Tony is an amazing asset to the community. I learned so much and would now how no hesitation about rebuilding my own engine. Plenty of hands-on time with a group of good people.
I highly recommend you attend this class if you are at all interested. Even if you aren't planning on rebuilding your engine, you will be much more comfortable with how the engine functions. Thanks again, Tony! |
3 Down 3 To Go............
As of today, we have 3 groups already completed their 2-day sessions. My wife who have been patiently helping me from the beginning advised me to make a short lesson plan and re-name it as Engine Rebuilding Workshop instead of “Engine Rebuilding Classes”.
Starting tomorrow with the 4th group, I will make a short note or reminder to follow the sequence and topics to be discussed because I could easily get distracted and forget something. A good example was what happened yesterday. During the course of the cam timing procedures, we encountered a minor problem but immediately corrected it. A participant did the cam timing for cylinder 1-2-3 with 1.50 mm cam reading. The other cam for 4-5-6 was done by another participant. After a few cam timing adjustment he got exactly 1.50 mm. These identical readings were a first ever. The elation and excitement among the participants was something to remember. And we were 2 hours ahead of schedule. And we stopped working after achieving 1.50 mm/1.50 mm cam timing. If I had a written lesson plan, I would not missed the cam timing sprocket alignment measurement. That was my mistake. And will have a written note to remind me of things to do next time. I can't stress how beneficial this class was. I have watched so many videos some incredibly produced and some not but without hands on instruction they really don't make a lot of sense.

Day one in the books, and WOW, just WOW. So much knowledge, sadly my tiny brain will only retain 10% of it. Tony is amazing at breaking down the process of engine building into a system that makes sense.

After all expenses are deducted I have between $500~$600 left for me and my wife Amor for the 2-day sessions. She helped in sending emails and responsible for cleaning and housekeeping. I spent between 24~30 hours total for each group. I am not complaining but my family is not happy about it. I could make more money working in a McDonald across the street. But I enjoy the Engine Rebuilding Workshop. It is feasible to do an Engine Rebuilding Workshop on the road if you have the fund to pay for my travel and expenses.
