Width of Turbo flares vs Carrera
What is the difference in width between Turbo flares and Carrera flares?
I spent an hour or so searching threads last night looking for this info. Found lots of interesting stuff and read about lots interesting builds, but all I really want to know is how much wider are Turbo flares compared to Carrera flares (front and rear)? On my 88 Carrera, the width inside the front wheel arch is 355mm (measured from the top of the wheel arch opening to the body just behind the strut) and the rear is 305mm (measured horizontally from the top of the wheel arch opening to the body) give or take a couple of mil. If someone with a Turbo can take the same measurements from the top of the wheel arches in to the body, it will give me what I need. ![]()

OK, here's some more information ...
I am looking at different wheel options for my Carrera with and without Turbo flares. I have a set of steel Turbo panels in the attic and can't decide whether to jump in and fit them. Finding some nice wide wheels will tip me over the edge! I have drawn the basic layout of the wheel wells and this allows me to play with different combinations of wheel size and spacer width. ![]()

What offset are you using on those wheels? I did not realize we could fit 9" rims in the rear of the SC.

This offset gives about 10mm clearance on the swing arm bolts. The outside of the tire is about 15mm inside the wheel arch at the top. This is with 255/40R17 Goodyear Eagle F1 tires that are 265mm wide overall. I have another set of wheels with same size Kumho Ecstas but those tires are only 255mm wide overall. They have more square sidewalls, so they fit with more clearance. ![]()

Turbo flares are 2 inch wider than carrera.
That being said from my desk and not measuring tape you have to add around 50mm to your measurements . (cars are stored for the winter) It's well known that carrera rear flares are 9" and turbo are 11" fronts are 7" and turbo 9" in the front Hope it helps

Bill, sub'd.
I run 285mm tires on my 87, and virtually no rubbing. One major caveat though, I have both torsion bars and helper coilovers. My rear is very stiff. Only time I'll get a little rub sound is on a major, and I mean, really big bump at high speeds**. Curious, are your turbo flares steel or glass? **I take that back, after moving the small spacers I had from the front to the back, it no longer rubs no matter what....

I had kinda guessed the difference was around 2". I have Turbo panels, but there aren't any reference points that can be easily measured for comparison when they aren't on the car.
Tippy, panels are all steel except for tail of course. What is your wheel and tire size on the rear? ET? It sounds like a good alternative to doing a whole body kit! ![]()

Bill, here's a vid of how little mine squats in the back. A sticky drag strip, fresh Sumitomo 285's, launching at about 3500 to 4000 RPM, and dumping the clutch.
