engine removal

Anyone have an idea the lift height needed for the jack or jacking method to go under the engine to remove once rear of car(911) is lifter. Looking at a motorcycle lift with 17 inch lift height. Thanks Jerry

Hi What year is your 911?
When you want to remove the engine all you need the floor jack..To make it easy for you remove the rear bumper .Which is 10 bolts and screws.
4 nuts on side harmonicas rubbers, 2 phillips screws on bumber rubber strip, 4 bumper to bumper shock nuts.Remove the license plate lights...and you are ready to go..Some 911 have heat shield protective plate ...

i use this one and with it there is plenty clearance to pull the engine out.

I am thinking that would be ok. Get the front wheels off the ground a foot or so. That will decrease the decline towards the front.

Have a floor jack for backup. Two if you can swing it.

Here is a pic without the front elevated. (stolen from a pelican post)

Hey Bob, that's my car! When I pulled that motor, I did have the front
lifted on jack stands but not real high. That's the Craftsman motor cycle lift, it's a really great unit, not as cheap as the HF one but you get what you pay for! Note that the rear 6 ton jack stands are INBOARD on the torsion bar tubes, gets stuff out of the way.

There was a post a while back talking about jacking up the rear to drop the motor out. If I remember correctly, the rear torsion bar covers needed to be about 24in off the ground for enough clearance. This is with the rear bumper removed. I don't remember what the number was with it still on.

Just went and measured mine with bumper on is up at 28”. Engine is much taller than 11”, so the 17” jack height will do the job easily.

You can also start engine out and raise the car up to the final height.

I use an ATV jack stand - more stability. Works great. I need 875mm (34.5") clearance to get my SC engine out.

Thanks for all the info. Last time I took the motor out in the early 90's I had a shop with a rolling trolley on a beam with a large hoist. We lifted the rear with that.

Just perspective due to the angle.

Hey Jerry how are you doing? Heard benefit was standing room only, I wanted to go but have my own issues. If you need help, jacks or jack stands let me know. That low profile high lift HF Jack would work well along with a $7 dolley and a piece of plywood.
Hope all is well stay warm.

Dave, thanks, the benefit was beyond my expectations. Ihave to continue moving forward with my life as long as my health allows. If I sit here and watch tv all day and dwell on the negitives is nott mentally healthy. I glad I have my 911 to keep my mind off the bad stuff!
