914-4 muffler

Which muffler is of better quality for a 73-74 2.0 the OEM style Dansk banana muffler as sold by Performance Products or the Bursch quiet set up that I can get from Pelican. Any other opinions on what muffler set up is best for this year and model is appreciated

TRIAD is definately the "hot ticket" right now....kind of like bell bottoms.....

I've got the Dansk. I haven't heard enough stock banana's to tell how the Dansk compares to it.

I currently have the Dansk muffler on my 74 2.0

Personally, I don't love the sound. It sounds very basic & too similar to a VW Bus. I'm planning on switching to the Bursch Quiet type.

I also have had the Bursch "glass pac" type. I hated it! It was too loud & sounded like I needed a new muffler.

I have a four tip monza and when I hit 3500 rpm I get this bloody resonance that makes every joint in my body vibrate. Can somebody suggest a better exhaust, a quieter one maybe?

I have the Dansk, can't complain about the quality looks decent and weighs a ton.

Some day I'll be able to comment on the sound.

The "MittleMotor" one looks real nice.

What do they run? Is there a source in the US for them, or do you have to order them directly from MittleMotor. What is their part # for that particular exhaust? Thanks, Charles

I assume that the price is in Euro, I know that folks here have ordered them, try a search for their experiances. No U.S. distributor that I'm aware of. It is Stainless IIRC.

I have the Triad dual, and all I have ever liked was the factory nanner.

It sounds like a Porsche.

Do you mean the Triad sounds like a porsche or the factory nanner sounds more like a porsche?

The way I've always understood it, nothing works better than the stock mufflers

There is some debate about which mufflers offer the best performance. If you factor in weight and cost, though, the aftermarket stuff is definitely a winner. The down-side is that just about all of them tend to rust out pretty quickly. (Bursch and Monza are pretty notorious for that.)

The factory muffler, or the repro one (which we also sell!) will be quieter than the rest. The Triad one has lots of fans right now. Someone on one of the boards was saying that a Triad that they saw didn't have much in the way of baffling (e.g., it was just a "glass pack") and they expected it to get significantly louder in a couple of years. No experience myself.

Hopefully there are folks out there on this BBS who have used a Triad for more than a couple of years and can tell us if they have gotten louder or not.

i have heard triads that have been on run cars for a number of years. i can't notice an appreciable increase in loudness. the difference is the change in tone as compared to the bursch. my 75' 1.8 will lose the stock setup and get the extra set of 2.0 ss he's and the single tip triad currently on the silver car. if i had the scratch i would do 3 dyno runs. stock, new he's w/bursch (have one of those too), and a triad. real world #'s would be nice to have. bursch's look so bad so quick because they use such poor quality paint. triad uses 1200 vht paint.

All Bursch ones seem LOUD. Hey Vern, before you swap to the "quiet-type", be aware that I when I did exactly that, I could not tell ANY DIFFERENCE- IT WAS AS LOUD AS THE ONE I TOOK OFF! (sory to yell, that car is so %**# hard to talk over...)
Really, it seems as though the only one that might actually muffle is the stock one. I haven't ever had rust out probs, but my car stays in garage, and I repaint the muffler evry so often (when I notice it looking shabby back there). I wonder how much performance one gives up to keep the dBs down?

Arguably, none at all. Or rather, I have known people who have argued that the factory banana muffler performed better than the Bursch, which was the widely-availble alternative at the time. (If you've been into 914s on-line for a while, you may recognize the names Brian Kumamoto and Tim Jones.)

I'm not sure, myself.

Do I recall any of the following correctly:

1) People say the Dansk banana is not as good (HP wise) as the Genuine?

2) The factory 2.0 banana is a 911 muffler with different inlets and outlets, hence, can be modified into a "sport" muffler like some of the 911 folks are doing?

3) Anyone dynamometer tested either one?

Question for Dave, what brand is Pelicans reproduction 2.0 muffler, it does not seem price competitive with some other places.
