Trailing Arm Help

I need some help!!! Before I figured out the easy way to remove the shaft in the trailing arm I was using a BFH. Well, I destryoed some threads. Does anyone have an extra one of these shafts they would be willing to part with?? Or... (the reason I am posting here) does anyone know if it would be safe to grind off about 1/4 to 1/2 inch and still get enough thread engagement?
I am ready to go five bolt but this is now holding me up!!! Please help!
JB

Here's an old shadetree mechanic trick, rather crude, but it might work. Get a nut for the shaft. Cut it in half. I have also cut across the threads in the open half to make a crude die. Place halves on good threads with oil and clamp down with vise grips easy enough so that nut will turn. Back off over damaged threads. IF you can figure out how to cut a grade 8 nut, it'll probably straighten out the threads

Why not go to Home depot and buy a thread die and "chase" the threads? A tap and die set is usually the cheapest way to go, but you'll have to buy the specific metric die for you're application.

Guys,
I already did the grinding. There was no way a die was going to fix it!!! Now it works again but it is about a 1/4 inch shorter than it should be!!!

I agree with Brad from All914's suggestion on the Yahoo 914 OA mailing list. Replace the stub axle. Sounds like you may have found a source in gregk1!

Greg,
It sounds like you are talking about the hub... this is actually the part that goes through the trailing arm to mount it to the frame. It is about a 2 inch wide shaft that is about 1 1/2 ft long. It has two threaded ends for bolts. Let me know if this is the part you have cause I really need to get ahold of one!!!

James, when the end is damaged by hammering as turtle indicated, there's little chance of starting a die straight w/o cross-threading. You need to get the die out in the middle of the good thread and work outward. I'm sure there are two-piece dies that do that, but for a one time /one chance save, my method will sometimes work.

JB,

Nice looking work! Are you using early (with the raised pads for 5 lugs) or late model rear hubs? Who drilled your hubs?

Thanks,
Mike

Those are "front" calipers. The rears are in a box somewhere. Those will be replaced with the 320i brakes I have on the front right now as soon as I find a 911 front end. That venting clearance stuff was no fun
