One other point, I don't believe was mentioned -

It depends on who you ask... The factory workshop manual recommends checking the valve adjustment every 5,000 miles for 1972+ four-cylinder 914s, which is the same as the oil change interval that they recommend.
I prefer to change oil every 3000 miles, and adjust my valves every other oil change--so 6000 miles. --DD
