944 performance enhancements

Last year Grassroots Racing ran an article on dyno test of there project 944. Chipped, header, and cone filter. Not much change by modifying exhaust and intake alone; about 3 hp.

After installing chip, about 10-15hp I seem to recall.

On a similar vein, has anyone have experience with using underdrive pulleys on 944?

While I'm asking questions: any thoughts on how much power 3 speed auto can take? My guess is 200hp. Please don't suggest I get a 5- speed car; my wife drives 944 and will never learn to shift!

Repo,

Haven't tried the underdrive pulleys. Off the crank pulley runs the Alt, AC, & PS. The power the Alt pulls is probably related to how much current you are drawing once it is to speed. The AC clutch doesn't pull much until you switch AC on. The power the PS pump pulls is probably limited by max PSI of a relief valve (haven't pulled a Porshe PS pump apart so not sure). If you put on a smaller crank pulley, there may be a slight amount of friction reduced in the assesories running at lower speed & maybe some small aceleration help with the less flywheel affect of a smaller pulley & greater torque mulptiplication acelating the assesory speed.

I would say not a lot o improvement for the dollar & effort.

It is greater improvement on a US V8 with the pulley driving the water pump.

Drew1,
Thanks for feedback on pulleys. I agree, don't think gains would warrant work but wanted 2nd opinion. Appreciate it

Cliff,
My wife has many fine qualities but last time we tried learning the clutch it resulted in a wrecked Saleen. Already have a 5 sp roadster (TR8); 944 is a shared toy. oh well.

AFJuvat, where did you get euro pistons from and the euro DME? What else have you done with your n/a engine? I was thinking about ordering custom pistons from ebsracing and maybe getting a hunley racing head. I was also thinking a huntley racing stage 2 cam eventually but this is just an ongoing project. Thanks for your help.

GrassRoots Racing article Dec 2001: my mistake, no hp figures. This was a follow-up article. Previously they had already put a chip in and had reduced 0-60 times. Now they were playing around with intake and exhaust. Quantative data given in 40-80 3rd gear times. Testing device used was a Vericom VC2000PC. They also installed a BMP fuel pressure regulator. 40-80 prior to mods: 11 sec; after: 9.86 sec.

This is a good one!

Putting the chip in backwards does what???

The engine doesn't start, then you turn it around and it is fine!!!!!!
On a 944, just make sure you disconnect the battery.

Putting the chip in backwards does one thing; it fries the chip.
therefore you will need a new chip. I have seen people do this on Bosch Motronic and Magnetti-Marelli. Every time a new chip was needed.

I bought an MSD 6AL ignition for cheap and a blaster 2 ignition coil. I am getting new plugs this weekend and I am hoping to put it all on by next week. We'll see if it's a noticable gain in HP or not. I'm not expecting anything really but we'll see what happens.

FR, you are a very patient man, I don't know how you put up with some your customers. I don't even think that I would satisfy these idiots with a return email.

Hey,

I got the euro Pistons and DME from Germany. You can special order them from any Porsche shop, or check the second hand parts dealers in Europe to get them.

My 944 I leave stock, I have done a few horsepower conversions on 944's

Euro DME (modified program), Euro Pistons, Bump fuel pressure, Port\polish head & intake, free flow exhaust, 924S transmission, lightweight flywheel, strip out the interior.

Net result 185 - 200HP on an NA (No I do not have dyno sheets)
Cost: $7000 parts and labor

You can get more by adding superchargers etc.

It is a common misconception that you cannot do anything to the NA engine - you can indeed do quite a bit to make it faster. However, as has been said, by the time you buy the car, buy the parts, blah blah blah, you could have already bought a MUCH faster car.

FR,

Was redoing interior on my '84 with automatic and noticed a 10 x 10 silver box at base of steering column. Is this DME box? Alarm and cruise are mounted far forward under center console.

I didn't see anything on passenger side. Did they put DME on driver's side in autos? Or was I just not looking hard enough. D**N bifocals.

thanks

I made FG bumpers fo rmy 924S. Think they saved 40-45lbs per end. I also have a 12lb battery that I used in that car and my green 951. Removing the top of the rear seat will save another 15lb or so. Spare tire and jack are another 40-50lbs. Al in all I think I shaved about 150lbs off my 924S, so it ended up being pretty light and nimble. To bad it had 225k!
