Spare Tire Subwoofer box.. audiophiles only!?!

I know some porsche purtians out there will be shunning me for cutting out my spare tire bracket... but it needed to be done. The story goes, subwoofers are key for a really good sounding stereo, i dont care what people say.... its true.... NOT 10 15's but one 10 inch is just perfect. A PERFECT 10. But my buddy has had a hatch smashed so that the villians could steal the sub. Sometimes they can break the glass from the inside if the box is not bolted down(takin the corners hard). The rear right and left corner cubby holes are too oddly shaped to build a box for and the KLA is tooo expensive. Solution is to build your own for an easy install into the spare tire well. Now here we have the Infinity Perfect 10 (amazing sounding sub "i highly recommend picking one up") My buddy and I built a box for his 944 and will be building one for my 944 in a couple days but here are the diminsions for a perfect 10 box for the spare tire well. 11.5 wide x 21 inches x 7.5 Deep. I will post better a better blueprint in a bit.

Here are some pics of the box that we constructed..... and it sounds great! .... and a link to a free software for sub enclousure design.

***We just built the second box for me CHECK OUT THE blog for pics and the blueprint for building your own!***

SOunds like a good setup. Good choice on the Infinity Perfect 10 - I've got one too! I have all the stuff I need now to build a shelf over where the bottom of the back seat is and I'm building the sub box directly into that shelf.
The problem I have is that the area where the rear wheel-wells are. cloning that shape will be interesting, but it shouldn't be too bad. I just have too many other projects, and I'll probably wait till I get new carpet to build the box into the car and do all that at once.

I had a box replacing my back set that contained two 12s and two 6s. I think I'm going to start work on a more streamlined shape this weekend.

I used to run a 10 in the same spot...........then 2 10's then 1 15".............

but now I went to one 8".

I grew up and realized size does not matter.

P.S What amp are you running..

That looks like a nice set up. I like the idea of getting a 10" sub in the car somewhere. I went the KLA route and I'm not entirely happy with the 8", though I'm still playing with the system to get a better sound. I also like the fact that, by removing the tire, you're not adding a lot of extra weight to the back end of the car. I think I decided against the tire well set up because I wanted to keep the spare. Ditto the back seat, though it's not like anyone could ever fit into the thing.

I think I'm probably going to sell the box I made to replace the back seat. I've come up with an idea for a more streamlined design.

sounds like some pretty nice setups.. I am using a JL 10" W6 with a 500 watt 500.1 JL amp. My buddy with the perfect 10" is running a Hifonics Saturn Series 400 watt. They are both sweet setups, my JL amp and sub should be here this week, then i can show the finished product .... should be good.

Does anyone know how to do a 'stealth' install of a 10" sub in one of the side cubby holes in the rear hatch area? Also, any ideas on where to put an amp for this setup?

Actually you have approximately 0.25 cfeet in that cubby if you make an MDF box for it.....

You may have closer to the 0.45 if you were to make a permanent fiberglass enclosure (that would not be removeable).

0.25 is no where near enough for a 10. So......

I went with a 8" rockford. It actually sounds good. Its enough fill for me.

I have been toying with this idea for a while also, and I finally have the money to do it. The spare tire well is a great idea, I did it two years back in my buddies 88 mustang. We covered the well with aluminum foil and then layed down about 5 layers of fiber glass. After it set we pulled out the fiber glass and attached it to an MDF board, which already had a cutout for the sub and a port attached. We then put it back in the well and had a really sleek looking setup. This setup was nasty loud! We had a 15" in there and the thing absolutely pounded. The hatch would literally flex when the sub hit. My friend now has a new car and much bigger systems as he is very much into competitions now so I cant get a picture of what the setup looked like.

pretty interest setups you guys are running.

I have 2 audibahn 10"s in a ported box.. 1600w sony amp & 2f capacitior mounted to the back of the box. makes for a real clean setup. low enough profile where the luggage shade covers it all. cut out a section of the shade so the l.e.d. on the capacitor pops out so i can monitor battery strain.

had two decks of speakers in the rear (rear wheel-well areas). Needed an amp, but they sounded awesome.

I reckon I'll make an MDF box for one of the cubbies with a 10" JL sub and 500watt Kicker amp - this is probs the least visible and most secure/safe setup for me. Will there be enough volume in a rectangular sealed box in that size enclosure to run a 10" sub though?

Any ideas on the tidiest way to run the wires from the rear hatch area through to the head unit?

I think you should change the title of this thread. No audiophile in their right mind would think that the inside of a 944 is for listening to kettle drums.

Try "ghetophiles".

Just read your post ae1969. Sounds like an MDF box in one of the cubbies would be too small for a 10" sub, and I don't really want to make a fixed fibreglass enclosure. So might be best off just bolting the box down in the luggage compartment and covering it with the luggage shade. I guess I could hide the amp in one of the cubbies. Do you reckon there'd be enough ventilation for a 500W amp in on of the cubbies if it had the carpet over it?

Careful not to drill into the gas tank.

Best way I've found is from the back of the head unit, behind the glove box, under the passenger side-carpeting. At this point there should be a plastic lip separating the carpet from the inside door frame - perfect to run wires under. This will get you to the back of the door. From there, run underneath the backseat side trim and into the hatch area. Now just zip tie whatever wires you have together and keep them out of the way. Might be able to even tuck them under the lip of carpeting that folds down from the back of the back seat.

Haha, I'm working on a large fiberglass enclosure, which will house 2 15's, and take up all of the available space in each cubby behind the rear wheels. With an amp rack bridging the space over the spare tire area. It will flip out so I can get at the spare tire still. Then again, I'm a bass freak

I got one of these in the back and its bolt to the seat somewhat...I can stil push the seat foward and still throw stuff in the back. Plenty of room for everyday storage. This thing rocks and the bass omitted from it is plenty deep. For the deepest possible bass you will need a crossover so keep that in mind if your wanting the neighborhood to hear you coming.

heres the Bazooka Tube I have...

has anyone tried the inifinty basslink box? it's a 10 inch paper-cone self powered enclosure, i'm guessing it might fit in the spare tire box. it's a tough choice, spare tire or extra bass. hmmmm....
