CD2 oil detergent, or Marvel mystery oil
My Pep Boys has CD2 oil detergent, and Marvel mystery oil, and Renoline (spelling?)
anyone have anything good or bad to say about these 3 products, to help get rid of a valve tap- sticking hydraulic lifter issue The marvel seems like a preventive product, but I have the problem already. The renoline seems made for this purpose, same with the CD2 which specifically says detergent. Also, my oil is fully synthetic Castrol, if that makes any difference. thanks

I have only used Marvel before and I really like the product. I also use Sea Foam which for a problem that is already there, I really like. I pick it up at AutoZone. I have never used either of the other two products you mentioned.

I've seen people swear by SeaFoam... that stuff works wonders..
another good product that i've had success with is Wynn's Engine Tune-up... it's made specifically to tackle sticky lifters... up here it comes in a little pink can with a pop-top like a soda can... not sure about the other products you list..

Ok so I added CD2. Started it up and the valve tap is still there of course. I leave for work and after a half mile tap is gone, but i had pretty bad white smoke all day I could see on acceleration. Detergent burning white? Guess I'll drive a few hundred miles, see what happens, then change the oil since it is due anyway. And I'll keep an eye on antifreeze level.

Detergent burning white? Sorry but the answer is no. You have a blown head gasket or oil cooler seals. Open the oil drain plug and drain some oil out and see if there is any coolant in it. If you drive it with coolant in the oil, you run the risk of locking up your engine.
Lifter problem may still be there on next startup, it may take a while to fix it...or, it may have fixed it already but I bet not just yet.

Crap. I better try to get this figured out before I ruin something.
Thanks for the info.

Drove it today. still no tap at all, and no smoke at all now either. I still want to drain some oil from the pan into a glass jar to look for antifreeze, next day or two.

If it was cold when you took off for work it's just moisture in the exhaust system which is normal.

Hopefully I was wrong and it was as simple as that. I hope so. Still a good idea to check though.

If you had coolant leaking through your head gasket, you'd know it. After a little while, the car would begin to buck under accelleration. Sounds to me like your oil/gas additive was just burning off (I have heard people talk about SeaFoam burning weird) or it was normal start-up smoke.
Just keep an eye on the situation to make sure it doesn't repeat.
