Air filter for S2 Engine in non-turbo front end.
I've got an 89 with a non-turbo front end with an S2 engine installed and am trying to work out an air filter solution. I'm concerned that a stock S2 filter setup is not going to like squeezing in under the normal front end header panel. Anyone have any experience with this or suggestions? Thanks.

Long time ago (maybe 6 years?) a fellow over on Rennlist stuffed an S2 motor into an NA (your setup) -- and his solution was to actually use a nose panel from a 931 (924 turbo). It'll require some cutting on the underside of the panel, but he reported that the S2 airbox fits underneath the 931 nose panel, but not under a 944 nose panel.
I never got around to trying that for my 944, before I grenaded the 968 motor, however.... The cone airfilter solution requires care -- notice how dangerously close the headlight linkage is to the filter in the photo above. Mine was like that, and would cut holes into the filter.

The pic was just an exemple but I realize now "sorry" that it won't work on your car because of your AFM maybe your only choice will be to get a 951 front end or with the nose panel of a 931 as mention by Josephsc will keep looking for you .

I pulled the header panel off of an 84:
![]() if an 89 looks anything like this then some sort of other setup is going to be necessary, as the front end of an S2 is significantly different: ![]() Anyone tried anything like this before or have any suggestions? Thanks. |

I would assume the 89 is more similar to my '86....

All '85.5 up cars (8v, turbo and 16v) had the same front clip. The big difference with stuffing either the S2 airfilter or turbo intercooler in that spot is the nose panel is larger for the S2 and 951. Also as you can see in Sidney's pictures, the upper radiator support is much different, allowing the plumbing to pass through. So yes, if using a '85.5+ tub you can use the S2 style airbox, but you need the turbo / S2 front end to make it fit. The difference there is the nose panel, bumper cover, bumper bar, front fenders, headlight covers and front headlight bezels.
The pre '85 cars all had what is in disgraceland's first picture.

Anyone know of an aftermarket setup that might work without replacing the front end?
