New Rubber

Installed new rubber Porsche bushings on the sway bar. The old ones were bad. Very bad.

Did install slightly modified intercooler. Not as nice as LR Stage 1, but should flow more freely as I run 1.15 bar/16.7 psi.

Did also get my steering rack rebuild (it gave up during last track day) and reinstalled. Cleaned the power steering pressure valve, and did alignment - no I have -2 chamber in front and -1.8 in the rear and -3,5 caster. The car feels like on rails - the low speed understeer is gone. Will see how it will handle on race track in second gear corners.

Also did wrap the exhaust headers and cross-over pipe. The engine is freshly rebuild, thus does not have any oil leaks, so I should be fine. The under hood temperatures have reduced significantly. Will see how long it will hold.

Did also improve my crankcase ventilation. I My throttle body was full of oil after the track-days. Will see how it will work with self- made oil catch can.

Did also uninstall my air-condition compressor and air conditioning radiator. Did see immediate positive effect on water temperatures.

Did purchase 911 (996) 17 inch wheels for the track (8.5x17 ET50 and 9x17 ET55) with 255/40 tire all around. I will repaint them (probably dark gray - have not decided yet) and use Yokohama Advan Neova AD08R 255/40 all around or maybe 245/40 in the front as the fit there is rather tight. Those rims are quite light - the rear rims 9x17 is 21.4 pounds, which is 4.6 pounds per wheels less than OEM CUP 1 9x17 wheels.

Hopefully my suspension (250lb Weltmeister springs in the front and 28mm TB rear, 30mm and 19 mm sway bars, update caster blocks and Powerflex bushings, upper strut bar) will not be too soft for such set-up. Mainly worried about the front as 28mm TBs are rather stiff for this set-up (might consider to change them to 27mm) thus my 19mm rear sway bar is on the softest setting).

Took cv axle out for the third time this week. Dissassembled and put it back together, i think they put it together wrong. Seems ok now it hasn't came apart yet.

Road Trip

Well... It wasn't today but two weekends ago I drove over the North Cascades Highway in Northwestern Washington and drove all the way down US 97 on the east side of the Cascades to Oregon. I then Drove down the Columbia river George into Portland. The trip was a little over 500 miles all in one push. I am always amazed by what good gas mileage the 944 gets. The next two days were spent at an SCCA autocross at Portland International Raceway. The car did pretty well at the events... the driver needs some more practice! On Monday I returned to the town of Hood River for a work conference. On Tuesday I headed back up the Gorge to 97 via the Klickitat River canyon. I got off 97 in Yakima and drove up the Yakima River canyon. Both are stellar sports car drives. I returned to the west side via I90 and headed north to home. In all I drove 1300 miles and raced two days... Not a bad weekend and the 944 didn't skip a beat!

Andy

had a great day at MidOhio, drove the car both ways and put down almost 4 hrs of track time.

Cleaned up garage and work bench so I could mess it all up again:

924S:
Rebuilt Power Steering Pump. Brake cleaner cleans things up perfectly.
Pressure flushed PS Cooler w/alcohol.
Fluid was brownish red (as opposed to reddish brown).
Cut off crimped on sleeves on PS return lines; replaced rubber lines, and all new hose clamps. Connections on reservoir were mush.
Formula 409 and 1/2 roll of paper towels to clean everywhere.
New PS reservoir/filter.
Spent half an hour trying to find PS filling capacity in FSM.
Gave up and followed instructions in the FSM (about 1 quart of Castrol Transmax Dexron VI does it).
Steering is now "tight" instead of "sloppy" feeling.
Messy project!!

E34 535i:
Cap, rotor, plugs, air filter.

Garage and work bench (and now hand tools) successfully messed up.

Had the local Porsche shop perform a coolant flush, mainly because I was too lazy and they quoted me a great price.

What's a great price for this?

Bought my first Porsche. Yesterday, actually. ~45k miles, 5spd, 1981. Bone stock except for the radio (some crappy early 00s JVC, eventually getting replaced with something period correct). Even came with the factory tool kit in perfect shape, and slip cover for the sunroof as well!

I've been a VW guy up until now, but my wife wanted me to get rid of my project GTI when she saw this for sale in our neighborhood. *shrug* ok!

Anything I should really know? I've been browsing 924.org and other resources I can find. Very much looking forward to enjoying this car!

Thanks! I don't see a metal plate anywhere, nor could I find an options sticker in the spare wheel well. Can I tell by VIN if it's a Weissach? Is there a way to look up options this car was shipped with? I'm in Rockford, IL, about an hour and a half west of Chicago.

I thought that was the car! I'm in Woodstock!!! You're more than welcome to come by and check out the shop and my collection :-) Also, if you're on FaceBook, consider joining the Chicagoland 924/44/68/28 enthusiast group. Here's the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/249990591824670/
The banner on that group is a photo from the get-together we had this past September.

You can't tell by the VIN, but the option sticker in the rear hatch between the taillight should confirm it. It should list a "459" option on the sticker.

Excellent! So you're *that* ideola... I will definitely have to come by your shop sometime soon. Thanks for the suggestion on the Facebook group!

I don't see an option sticker in the hatch anywhere, and unfortunately I don't have the original owner's manual either. That is one of the few things that the car did not come with... Is ordering a CoA the only way to find this information now?
