We just released the new PCA 968 register site a few weeks ago.
This page should provide plenty of detail on interior codes from the 968 years: Interior Codes / Statistics | Porsche 968 Register Enjoy. |

KdJones2000, From the information that I have gathered, interior color code "XP" normally mean "Light Grey" with Porsche script inserts. So your seats might have been changed out because you no longer have the fabric Porsche script inserts. But those seats do look like "light grey" to me.
And from the pictures it does look like your car is what Porsche calls "light grey" Which is actually a beige color. If you are looking for seat covers for your car then we now sell them, and the color you are looking for is called "Greige". We are happy to send you a sample for free. Email or PM me your address. 944 Seat Cover

Thanks for the information, but I want to correct you on one thing.
1) XP does not mean "Light Grey" with Script. I have my original seats, and they are partial leather. I consider pre-'89 Light Grey and Grey-Beige to be the same, as I have not found any differences between the two in my past 10 years looking into this. You might have more information, not sure. Interesting. The interior color codes are weird in the 944. As far as I can tell, there is not an exact meaning for each, but most of the time they mean something.
From the past examples that I have been given, "XP" means light grey with porsche script, but it doesn't mean it's that all the time, I guess. Yes, what Porsche calls "light grey" is not actually grey or light. lol. It's actually grey-beige. This is what confuses a lot of people. They look up the color code and it says their interior is light grey, but when they look at it, it's grey-beige, or tan looking.

I'm confused, you said "The seats in my car have been replaced by some from another car (don't know for sure which), so are close but have more of a red tint than the originals:"
Do you have the original seat in your car or have they been changed?

I have both sets. Sometimes it's cheaper and easier to buy used seats rather than spending $1500 on new covers.

the 968 buyer had 98 different interior configurations to choose from. when it came to outfitting a new 968 with an interior, the purchaser had 3 decisions to make: 1) color, 2) material, 3) configuration and that resulted in 98 choices. A unique interior code was assigned for each one of those combinations and used by the dealer when ordering a new 968. Not sure if it was the same for the 944 |

kdjones2000, Ok, I see. It's always interesting to find out more information about the 944 interior color codes. And by the way, out seat covers start at $340 and look and feel darn good, if I do say so myself. lol.
jeff968, It's great that you guys have that complete list. That's what I was trying to make for the 944 community but wasn't receiving enough help from others. From looking at the 968 list it looks like they used different codes than they did for the 944. I would assume that each color code meant a certain combination, but I just don't know for sure. There isn't enough data out there yet to say one way or another. It's also tough because you never know what the previous owner has done to the car. Because the cars are so inexpensive, people like to do all kinds of crazy things to them. I am still collecting 944 interior color code information if anyone still wants to help out.

GW,
Yes, you have much more of a challenge in front of you. When I assembled the 968 list I only had 4 years to deal with and the usage of codes was standardized by that time. Granted, there were a lot of them! You've got twice the number of model years and it looks like things changed along the way. That said, I think towards the end of 944 production there is some similarity with the 968s so you'll have some overlap. Good luck Jeff |

Here are some references for colors available from the aftermarket guys like Automotion.
My car is the LQ interior code, 1988. This is the commonly called "Grey-Beige" or "Lt. Grey" color on the pre-'89 cars. I received some samples of the colors closest to the interior color. Here is a comparison directly on my interior pieces: Door panels: ![]() Rear seats: ![]() Front seats (These seats are not the original to the car, and are a slightly different color): ![]() The darker color, which matches much more closely to the OEM, is called "Linen" by Automotion.

Courtesy of RėL, for 1984 MY.
I highly doubt Porsche would over-write a code with a different color, purely to avoid confusion. In other words, these codes would presumably apply to cars thru the eighties and probably into the nineties. (All else being equal, I imagine a Cashmere interior has a different code than a Champagne interior....) Last edited by FrenchToast; 07-03-2017 at 08:40 PM.. |

And here's a comparison of the kick panel carpets from an '88 Grey-Beige car and ones I got from an '89 Linen car in the local Porsche junkyard:

How rare is this? A white 84 with brown leather/cloth interior; not my choice of interior, but I found my car with it! |

Cloth is fairly uncommon in the U.S. market. So it is fairly rare. As for exact numbers I have no idea. I would guess ~10% of North American cars have cloth?

Does anyone know what XQ is? It's from an '86 turbo and I haven't been able to get a definitive answer. I need to get carpet and some other interior parts and would like to know the exact color.

I'm still slowly gathering more and more color codes, and I'm FAR from having them all yet. So far I don't have XQ color code. But I do have QX. QX is what Porsche called "light gray" which is really a tan/beige color. I would be interested to know what XQ is. Can you post a picture of your interior/seats?
