How to disable "check oil level light"
I have a 1987 944 turbo and would like to disable the check oil level light that comes on every several months. I understand you need to short out the white with yellow stripe wire that comes from the sender unit to the dash. You can short it at the sender unit or under the drivers side dash. Can someone tell me how to do this.

Is it coming on when the oil level is not low?

if it's working properly, and you're vigilant on maintaining proper oil level, you should never see that light come on anyway. so i have to ask, why would you want to disable it?

think about it, it comes on despite the oil level being correct, obviously there is a fault somewhere most likely in the instrument cluster ($$$$) and because I dont want a constant warning light on for something I know is not a problem, hense I want to disable it....
get it, got it, goooooood Last edited by quickster; 03-06-2013 at 04:14 PM.. |

Here you say that it is NOT coming on when the oil level is correct.
Now you're saying the opposite. Which is it?

i think what he meant was that the light is always on, regardless of oil level.
if this is the case, it's probably the oil level sensor, which is a very easy fix. you literally unscrew the old one and screw the new one in. this is a relatively reliable part, so it is more likely that you have a bad/frayed wire connection near there, which is more common. this is the part: Pelican Parts - Product Information: 944-613-150-00-M100

yes the light will sometimes just come on by itself even the oil level is correct, which i check on a regular basis, if you check my profile for old pictures you will see the car is well taken care of. Whats weird sometimes i would mess with some wires on the passenger side red wire from radio, and light would go out and stay out for a time. I have replaced the oil level sender, made no difference. Now I have gone through all the ground and have cleaned them except for the one i get to when i put the car over our grease pit. I think its probably in the printed circuit board unless i luck out and its in one of the grounds i clean up, also recheck the wires near the sender and oil pressure switch. If all this fails I will just ground the oil sender wire to chassis.

Still probably points to the sensor though, I agree.

If all that fails you might want to look into the oil pump. A faulty pump can send the oil light on also.
