Can someone explain the bids on this e-bay 1970T project?

Looking at this car, all I see is a lot of work to make it right. So why the bid of $21k (as of now). What am I missing? The VIN says it is a 'T', so I don't think it is a case of mistaken identity. Have 'T's increased in value that much, or is this one of those manipulated e-bay acutions?

I have to say I have been surprised lately at the price T projects. However take a look at the bidders detail on this one, that might help you answer the question . It looks like the real bidding stopped around 15 K and if the winning bidder doesn't take delivery and he gets good feedback it won't surprise me.

Looks like a good base for a project car. With drivers moving toward $30k not a bad price.
$15K was a steal beginning this year, not now.

copbait,

I do not understand your last sentence. $15k at beginning of year was a good price, but not now? Good price for who?

Thanks

Longhood pricing is still escalating. $15k as advised in previous posting was good at the first of the year. I witnessed 356 pricing move like this and stayed out of that market, forever regretting not getting another when they were affordable.
The high bidder is looking a what can be a good longhood.
Another important consideration. This is not a Targa. Targas are not as desirable (looks) but pricing for them is typically thrown in.

Two things make this car a good value. The color Signal Orange is very popular now. A desirable color can add 5-10K to the value of a restored car. Rust repair, (this car is very solid), can add many thousands of dollars to the cost of a restoration, and don't forget length of extra time, time spent not enjoying the finished car. Those two factors alone "add up" to the current bid in my opinion.

OMG - looks like new bidder jumped in and won it for 23K!

I have a similar car I'll be putting up for sale. Would be thrilled with $23K, but realistically it's worth a couple grand less.

I think what we're seeing here is two things: one, a lack of clarity on whether the engine was matching to the chassis. That was left vague, and possibly the high bidder assumed it was the original engine. Two, we are seeing a 'color premium.' Someone really wanted a signal orange car... and was willing to pay a few grand more to get it.

This appears to be a fairly solid straight car - that said Techweenie I think your vague observation is right on and can be supported further -

how about no title or reg - bill of sale only ? who really owns the car - buyer might never really own it.

rust bubbling at the rt rear corner of the rear window certainly some rot in the rear shelf and how far forward does it go?

front pan was replaced - what no pics to see the quality of the repair ?

no shots of the front trunk

"most" of the interior

carbs are seized - is there water in the motor?

Gauge bezels and rear trailing arms have a large amount of rust for a dry car.

Hope it really sold at that price because I have a 72 E and 73.5 T projects I would sell tomorrow if they would bring that kind of money.

Was there a premium for car's location? Fewer non-rusted out cars on the east coast?

Yes, good point. After what I just went through with a couple shippers... it's not just the cost of transport, it's the loss of stomach lining dealing with the layers of brokers. So yeah, couple grand premium, easily.

Yes, my comment, a clean car already on the East Coast.

I'm located in IN, I try to drive my 73 long hood as often as I have an excuse. Even took it to the CIA Porsche coral at the Indy GP. There were no other long hoods at Indy. Heck I saw no other longhoods on the street this year.

I say this as you are in the MidWest also. Outside of the West Coast street driven longhoods are becoming very rare.

"Outside of the West Coast street driven longhoods are becoming very rare".

Meet Misses Brown a restored 1973.5T in Sepia of course that is driven all day long several days a week throughout the Atlanta area. The only problems I have? Guys in pick-up trucks with company logos hanging on my bumper for a closer look, or the dad's in SUV's around the lunch hour dodging traffic to catch up to have a look see and of course the kid on the way to school in that "rice-burner" with the big "fart can exhaust" wanting to take on an old 911. Porsches need exercise and Misses Brown is no exception Got em....drive em.

eBay pricing

This is a fairly intelligent exchange with some fairly "informed" participants
so I am going to offer one added factor. You cannot assume high bidders are informed or intelligent ......I have seen deals many times that make you shake your head in amazement.
Logic, sorry that could be missing. The curse and or beauty of the "auction" depending on which side you are on.
