CLutch Recommendations

I need to replace the clutch in my extended 930 project. The stock pressure plate is VERY heavy. What recommendations do you have for a lighter pressure plate? Thanks,

Tom

This question pops up every now and then. Lighter PP, lighter FW, different clutch disc as opposed to that stock rubber piece of crap, etc. Pros and cons to going too much lighter, since the 930's tend to like a little extra clutch mass to keep the momentum going.

Personally, I'm sold on Kennedy Engineered pressure plates. If I recall, it weighs 14 lbs (stage 1, anyway, which is what I chose). That with a Sachs disc. The only other thing I did was to have the FW resurfaced and of course replaced all the other requisite stuff while in there. The thing positively "hooks 'em up". Walt, you listening????

I got a clutch kit through turbokraft for my 83 turbo.

> * aluminum pressure plate
> * spring hub disc
> * release bearing
>
> Flywheel R&R Kit
> includes Pilot bearing , Viton rear main seal
> 9x flywheel bolts
>
> plus release bearing extension and release fork is worn,

the pedal pressure is low and fitted with no problems.

i have had 4 clutches on my car and the last two i was happy with. the first was from imagine auto which is no longer available and the second was a Kennedy engineered products. Which i like best of all and is rebuildable.

I have a fidanza flywheel, KEP stage1 Pressure plate with organic disk.
Idle is a bit more nervous, but still stable. Throttle response improved and rpm's decrease quicker while shifting. No issues yet

I GOT IT!!!

Will make some phone calls-to KEP...

The only thing on the 915-STAGE1-says it holds 350tq..And stage 2 is up to 400+tq. I think i would opt for a stage 2 alum..if avail..
But how hard/feel push down??

Walt

I am running the stock PP and switched to a racing Sachs spring centered clutch disc. No noticeable difference in response because the clutch disc was only slightly lighter weight than the rubber centered unit. At least I can relax and not worry about the rubber disc blowing apart with the upgraded 3.4 liter engine I rebuilt. The disc feels like it holds up to track days with no slippage. No less easy engagement from a stop than the stock rubber disc.

If I had the fundage for the lightweight PP and throwout bearing extension I would have done it at the same time. Thats for further down the time line now when I see money fall off the back of a truck on my way home from work one day, ha,ha.

Torque Capacity with stock disc

Clutch Stock KEP Increase
KEP 930 - '75-77 374 600 60%
KEP 930 - '78-88 423 600 42%
KEP G50 - '87-89 460 600 30%
KEP 944 turbo 378 600 59%

Your stock PP has much better tq. rating than my standard 915 PP.
Porsche 225mm 911 clutch package. Primarily sold as a clutch kit to Kit Car builders complete with installed bearing, ring gear, fasteners and all new genuine German parts. Fits '72 or newer 915 Porsche transaxle. The 360 ft. lb. of torque capacity handles most stock 350 Chevrolet V8 engines.

KEP Porsche 915 HD pressure plate. Holds 477 ft. lbs. of torque with a stock disc. We also offer this in all aluminum for a lighter weight application.

I think i will opt for the hd-alumn.

My stage II KEP PP is very hard to push even though hydraulic for my G50.

I have a Kevlar disk. It was only $250.

My Stage 1 is maybe just marginally stiffer than the stock PP. No issue whatsoever with drivability (other than the first few miles getting used to the throw and a little grabby 'till things wore in).

The Stage-1 will not hold 600ft-lb. If you have 600ft-lb, you'll need their Stage-II (quite stiff pedal) or a Sachs Race Engineering "934" pressure plate ($$$ but pedal effort comparable to stock).

As a direct bolt-in, the KEP Stage-I is a decent unit, light weight. We use them if someone wants to save money and doesn't t mind the pedal effort.

I think the KEP stage one basket is supposed to hold around 500 foot pounds maximum on a good day with a new disc and also depending on how old the pressure plate diaphram spring is.

A friend of mine bought a new KEP stage 2 pressure plate and KEP disc that has a one piece friction material all the way around both sides like a stock Sachs disc. It also has a thicker and heavier duty center section with stronger springs.

KEP said it will handle more torque than the stock disc and it cost around half what the Sachs spring center disc usually goes for retail and it looks better.
I was impressed when I saw it. He hasn't installed it yet so I have no idea how it feels in use.

I received the clutch and Pressure Plate from KEP yesterday (Stage I). It is much lighter than the stock unit and looks to be well made. I will install when I get some other items taken care of. Thanks for the recommendations.
