outer CV boot replacement - secret handshakes?
I'd done my inner boots when I had my motor out, and have been DREADING this day since I got the car a meelyun years ago - outer boot has gaping hole (think: Ronknees gape!!!).
Pretty certain I caught it right away, there's not a drip of grease thrown out of it yet - phew. I've searched a few threads on the 911 tech forum but figured I'd ask my bestest budz here - how do you guru's like to tackle an outer boot on your 930? Have to pull the whole axle? Any insight bra-clasp secret handshakes appreciated. Found the hole (!!!!) whilst under there locating my massive fuel leak - burst a line... pulling into my driveway! Talk about great luck - I'll take it! Geesh. Right onto steaming hot header - f'n SPOOKY! Len's dropping me off a new line tomorrow - how cool is he? Stoooooopid banana arm has an upright 'edge' on top that's sharp and when the car is lowered back to the ground the fuel line rubbed against it and perf'd. Awesome. I must have routed the line wrong back when I'd installed Len's main tunnel lines - sigh. anywho.......... |

I can't remember if the half shaft will compress enough to allow you to loosen the outer bolts to allow it to release and come down towards the floor enough to push a new boot on or not. I guess you can try, and if not, you know whats your gonna half ta doo. Best make sure the CV joint is good, tho, and since you're in there, re-grease it up like you know Rawknees likes it...

Yecch. Did this somewhat recently. Axle out. Make sure to brake kleen the bolts and go at them super square with a quality socket. You don't want to round one of the outside bolts out, ever. Parts washer helps but disassembly and repack is a filthy job. Latex gloves etc, Doctor.
And you know this, but recheck bolts after 50-100 miles.

It's not hard and I still need to do it since getting new boots...
I spray off the flinged grease under there with spray can engine cleaner and a garden hose. Get the back of car as high as you can on jackstands, lay on your back under there, use a long pry bar between two allen head bolt heads and the floor or bottom of the car to keep it from turning and remove the other allen head bolts with socket wrenches. Or you could use the emergency brake. |

i just did all 4 of mine,
just pull the shafts out, its not that big a deal. I remove the wheels and use a LONG extension for the inner ones. when putting back on, put the outer side on first. take note of the CV joint. the groove goes to the outside the "step" on the inner flange goes to the center of the axle the big side of the cage goes to the outside. (I did not notice on mine) get the KN boot from here. it has a groove on the big end that fits onto the flange you can get a set of the clamp crimp pliers from advance for $10 I did not put a clamp on the inside (small end) of the boot. I used swepco 101. I liked it because it was kind of sticky one tube will do 4.

Paul, I am doing this job also. Found a boot torn outside driver side. Like they said axle has to come out. It is not that bad a job. Good luck.

A'ight - so pulling my axle (!) Proved to be a 7min endeavor and nowhere near as bad as I'd been unnecessarily imagining. Thought I'd heard the outers were a hoor but t'was a snap.
SC John'd aptly reminded me that I need the paper gasket that goes betwixt ze shaft and ze joint. Doh. Not in the kit. Fak. Is it OK to cut one out of gasket stock, or best be patient to order right one? Would thunk it'd be ok to cut one. Also got my new Len fuel line on, he dropped one off @ my exit Monday - he's the MAN! TIA, muuffuukkaahhzz... |

1987 930 CV joints have a pressed on steel cap on the flange side, there is no gasket on them. The older thicker CV joints had no cap and they should have the gasket or grease eventually flings out and water can get in.

^^^JF is correct...your CV joint should not have any gaskets. When I rebuilt my CV joints I applied thin layer of Hylomar sealant between the metal cap(s) and main body of CV joint to keep the grease in.
