Alternator Belt(s) R1100S

So whats the dealio with the 2 different Alt. Belts? There appears to be an early model belt () and a late model (post 07/2003) belt.

My bikes build date was 03/2004 (clearly late model, no?). Do I really need to take it to the dealer to have an Alt Belt installed because it requires 3 Special BMW Tools? WTF?

FYI, My Alt is not fixed, but tensionable, and the one off the bike was sku'd as the early model.

Anton? Bobby? Asking here because my local dealer is GARBAGE!

I saw that thread in my research before purchasing the post 07/2003 belt, which my bike clearly is by the markings on the frame, and by VIN lookup. Built 03/2004, nearly a year after the change, yet I have the old style adjustable alt, with the long belt.

BTFW, I had to special order the damn belt and wait a goddam week for the ****ing wrong part!

Next time am I supposed to remove the part, then go to the ****ing dealer with it in hand and spoon feed the muther****ers? From ****ing BMW??? How goddamn hard is it to get accurrate infor..****ing..mation! I ordered 3 ****ing parts and 2 of them were wrong! A belt and a damn screw!!! Do they know whats going on, NO, I have to look it up my damn self on the internet, and then when i mention that, those *******s say "dont believe what you read, this is the one you need right here, the date says so". **** OFF CC, NEVER AGAIN!!!

The difference is ABS and non-ABS as well... the ABS models had bigger alternators.

At least the service matches you attitude... there's balance there! Must be a NEW JERSEY thing...

Ever heard the term "Carma"?

...there is a good song by John Lennon about that!

All I can add is that if you look on the bottom of your belt cover and you see a small triangle it is the new style belt. It requires, technically, a 250 dollar special tool to adjust properly. It is suppose to last 36K without adjustment or replacement. I believe the old style is good for either 12 or 24K. I have heard some folks just use a small pry bay and tighten by lifting the alternator to a point the belt will twist 90 degrees. Then tighten the alternator bolt. Have not done this yet so all hear say. I am thinking about having this tool made. Not sure yet. The dealer quoted 65 buck for the install plus parts, don't think so.

Thanks,

looked, no triangle... 36k on belt and looks like it can do 36k more. hardly a crack.

Hey highlander,

If you have the old style belt, your part nubmer ends in 779. I have been told that BMW replaced the old belt with teh new belt and pulley, then ran out and went back to the old style, then got some more and went back to the new style.

It's no biggie though. Buy a belt from maxBMW. Take the cover off. Loosen the three bolts that hold the alternator up. It will drop and you can take the old belt off, then put the new one on. Then, jam a big-ass screwdriver under teh alternator and lift it (pretty hard). tighten one bolt while you hold it, then tighten the other two.

It's a fifteen minute job. As a bonus, then you have a spare and the mad skills to change one on the road.

Nice rant.

About a year ago, OTL had an article of mine describing all of the alternator belt stuff. Why some models and not others, differences in tensioning, etc. If you have the splined pulley on the alternator you should use the newer PK592 belt and set it by distance. If the older pulley with the nut, PK611 and set by tension.

BMW did a really shi++y job implementing and disseminating this change.

So after the tequila from last night wore off, I ran over to NAPA this morning with the belt I took off the bike. They have the EXACT same belt in stock.... 10 bucks. The install is cake... once you have the part that fits.

Thanks gents.

Thanks George. I'm going to NAPA next and getting one for a spare. I also added a spare oil sight glass in my tank bag.
