r12s How many?
Hi gents - Is there a site indicating, or anyone definitively know how many r1200s' were produced, and of those, how they were (ohlins, wheel, colors, etc.) optioned? I've scrolled through threads until cross-eyed. I've read 400 units or thereabouts were made for the U.S. market. Somewhat ambiguous though.
regards,

i think the number is 2500 worldwide and 400 or so US, there is a thread here about color, but i think the colors were pretty equally distributed. as far as knowing how many of them had the ohlins and upgrades, good luck

I have the only White Aluminum Metallic (Silver) non ABS with Ohlins on the planet, until someone can prove me wrong.

I just found out today, after someone pointed out they thought the number was way low............that it is, and sure enough, I have here at the shop one of the very first 1150 USA Rocksters imported into this country. I have number 17 and the bike was made in 12/02. Less than 8000 miles, one owner, bronze and black, full Ohlins, never been in the rain........not even once. It was the first Rockster sold in Houston, Texas.
I would love to find a R12S like that. |

Here's the factory invoice on my bike - It's also equipped with the auxilliary power plug on the right side near the ohlins adjuster knob - I'm assuming this is part of the heated grip package?

[edit] I did find this one with no ABS, but also no heated grips, and no Ohlins. http://orangecounty.ebayclassifieds.com/motorcycles-scooters/brea/2007-bmw-r1200s/?ad=14021986 When I asked the dealer to find me one with ohlins and no ABS, he shook his had and said he didn't think he would find one because of the way options were bundled, but he did find mine.

I think most of the bikes were sent to the dealers the way BMW had them built. They could be custom-ordered, but the order would only be filled if a dealer had allocation. I ordered mine and waited months to no avail. BMW wouldn't fill the order for my dealer, I assume because none were allocated to him. They finally offered him a bike similar to mine and I took it. I really wanted the trip computer and the alarm. I did get the alarm later, but no computer. Seriously effed up company in that regard.

This has me puzzled as well. The invoice clearly indicates no charge for the 'night black' paint, as I'm certain all but the candy cane were, but - was there an optional no cost, 'alternative' final drive ratio offered?

We've discussed this before as I recall (an action I try to avoid as it seldom yields much fruit) and came to the conclusion that the alternate drive is the standard one. Look for a thread that Curve started as he was looking for a rear drive ratio that would allow him to increase top speed. We were all going out to our garages standing on our heads looking for the drive ratio. Mine is 2.75 and is the "alternate drive".

I did order a "alternate drive" (racing) from BMW, and still have it. The problem is, and was, that I had to pay almost 2000 for it. It is a complete ready to bolt up rear end for the R12S and also for the HP2 that is a 2.62 Ratio. I have never unpacked it and if anyone would like better mileage, higher top end, and lower RPMs while touring on long runs.............get in touch. I had planned to use the rear end for a HP2 run at top end at the ECTA Maxton Mile in southern N.C..

One of the threads on the non-existant optional drive: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/bmw-r1100s-r1200s-tech-forum/330988-revelation-disapointment-no-2-62-but-2-75-others-suggested.html

2,459 built.
BTW: In the very beginning BMW didn't know whether they should use a 190/50 or 190/55 rear tyre. They decided to take the wrong one, the 190/50. They also did not knwo whether they should use a 1:2,62 or 1:2,75 final drive unit. They took the right one, the 1:2,75. But they didn't meet the needs and wishings of many customers to make the final drives interchangeable. They used at least 3 different ABS systems within the 1200 Boxer series and so the final drives had different sensors and different transducer gears that are incompatible when used in a bike with a different ABS system. If you give the ABS a miss, you can use a different final drive out of the 1200series on your bike without problems, but if you want to keep the ABS working it's pretty much work: Changing the gears inside the final drive , built a transducer gear with the right measurements of the stock one and install it onto the gears to send the right signals to the ABS sensor of your bike. The "long" 1:2,62 final drive (stock in R1200RT and R1200ST) doesn't make sense in a R1200S as long as the 12S isn't tuned heavily. The strongest tuned R1200S bikes, like the one my friend "Rika" owns with REAL 152 hp DIN, need it and they accelerate much faster with the long 1:2,62 than a stock R1200S with the shorter stock 1:2,75 final drive does. In Hockenheim down the long "Parabolika" the fastest, strongest R1200S race boxers reach ~ 268 km/h (measured by GPS, ~ 167 mph ) which is ~30 kmh (~19 mph) less than a stock S1000RR does there. A normal stock R1200S is limited to ~ 245 km/h (~154 mph). Last edited by Sofatester; 11-11-2011 at 03:49 AM.. |
