IMS Question

Hi !

Theres been alot of posting re IMS bearing lately, so I've been thinking about it more and more. I have a 2000 S Boxter 40,000 miles... car is running excellent. The oil was changed about 600 miles ago by the dealer. In the service records there is no indication that the mechanic examined the oil filter for shavings or anything out of the ordinary. I'm wondering if I should do this to have some confidence and peace of mind that it is a non-issue. I don't have a durametric yet so I can't test the cam shaft for deviation /alignment per Wayne's book. I would appreciate your wisdom.

Thanks

Rod

I have a 97 boxster that I purchased two months ago, its has 133,000 miles on it and runs nice!!
I did my first oil change after 2500 miles and found small mettalic peices in the filter that were magnetic. Had indy mech give second opinion he said probably time to do ims. I just got ln kit, should be doing the job soon. I left some pics of my filter, kind of hard to see but you'll get the picture.(no pun intended, lol)

Will post pics of bearing once I pull it out, for me at least I will have some peace of mind knowing it has been upgraded. No longer worrying every time I hear a strange sound. Which usually is the car next to me.

You probably should do it since you are concerned (rightfully so) you don't have to change your oil just pull your filter out and examine it and if it is ok then put it back in. no harm no faul

Last year I bought a '99 with 30k miles. No metal in filter, no noise, but I did the bearing because I did the clutch.

Lucky I did, it was loose.

Thanks for the replys. I Will check out the oil filter. I was leaning that way toward changing the oil and looking at the filter. Thanks again.

The old bearing in my car was perfect. I'm still glad I did it because now I can enjoy driving it a lot more. I know there are other failure modes, but not as common. Knocking out the IMS and AOS has me feeling pretty good for a while. Water pump and reservoir will be the next items, but after doing 944 turbo water pumps, the Boxster will seem real easy.
