shipping to Canada
I recently purchased engine parts, and had a motor rebuilt in Florida, for my 87, 930. Now the fun begins! I wanted to have it shipped to a destination in Canada. Hired a shipping co. at a very reasonable price, and customs broker. Country of origin, and NAFTA. WTF it's only a motor! Seems they want me to specify which parts are made in the USA, and which are made in Germany. Anyone been in a similar situation, or maybe the invoice for the importation should read as other? Seems to me that a big deal and extra paperwork is being created over a simple transaction. Any comments or experiences you guys can add to help me think this through would be appreciated. Philip

Was it a 86 engine that you rebuilt? If so, declair it as a antique........0 duty.
The reason they are asking about what was made where is so you only pay duty on the non NAFTA parts and not the labour. Example: You buy a engine for $5000 in the USA and you spend $5000 in parts and labour rebuilding it. It is now worth $10000. You should only pay duty on the original purchase price (that is if all the parts you bought to rebuild it were made in the USA). You will pay GST & PST on the total price.

So perhaps he should delay the shipment until 2012 for it to qualify as an antique?

antique
I went to customs the other day, as I live close to a crossing point, and was told it does not quailfy for a antique. If it did, I would need a certificate of antiquity. Philip

Well he didn't say it was the engine from the 87 he had rebuilt, just that it was for his 87. If it was from a 86 or older engine he should be able to declaire it as a antique and save the duty hassle part of the import. Or wait till January

"certificate of antiquity"????? I would have asked them to show you a example. On vehicles it's determined by age of manufacture.

And on engines the serial number would determine it's age.

85 block
Actually the case is from a 85. When I talked to customs the officer said there was no antique clause for the importation of car parts. She said the duty on German parts or motors is 4%. How do you argue with someone at customs and try to say there wrong?

Phil
It's only 4%. I'm sure that Kim's car sale revenue would cover that...

Well I would have pointed out (politey) that a engine is a collection of parts whos age is determined by it's serial number. Just like a car which is a collection of parts bound together by it's serial number.
![]() It really dosen't matter as you are paying a broker to fill out the paperwork. Good luck

Is it your engine that you rebuilt? Did you ship from ontario to florida and have it rebuilt?
If so, your only paying duty on the parts, and even then only the parts from abroad. You should have a green card from customs though that you would have obtained when you too it to the states. (If you knew to stop at canadian customs to get one). If not you'll need something to prove you own that engine. |

Don't bother. They really need the money
to pi$$ away on more subs, make-work projects and other junk.

Manufactures way back, never kept records of what engine went with what car. Just a range of serial numers used is certain years. They as government agents should know the laws. Start your complaint addressed to "Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty" mailto: jflaherty@fin.gc.ca When you complain start at the top as s h i t runs down hill (just like in plumbing)

sorted
OK, so I think I have this sorted now. This is a block/project which I bought here on Pelican (ZUF), and had a shop in Fla. do the build. As it turns out, the German parts are subject to the duty rate of 4% above the norm. The North American manufactured parts, (dizzy, wires , mds, ext.) are only subject to the 6.1% norm rate. I'll keep this thread posted, as the motor is to be shipped this week. Philip

The vintage has nothing to do with taxes or duties. A 15 year old or older vehicle simply gets to avoid the RIV. No Canadian compliance needed. That's why you see right hand drive cars plated.

Actually that is not the case...the "antique" cars / parts ARE exempt from duty. There is a thread on here (importing cars) that has it explained very well...I took advantage of this when I brought over a car in the fall. philip...my recommendation to you is not to worry about the duty thing right now...just pay whatever and get the engine home. Once you do, THEN start the process of getting a refund. All you have to do is provide your blue customs form showing the duty paid, fill out the refund form and send it in. all the links are on the above sticky on importing cars.
