OT: How much is a decent BMW 2002 worth?

Pre-1974 BMW 2002, in Northern California, that is?

tii would be nice but I am more (realistically) interested in the base model.

I passed by one for sale today and it got me thinking. I have liked them for some time now and I want to know how much on average I should expect to spend to get a fairly clean car.

I think this guy was asking too much. $3500, peeling paint on the trunk, faded everything, dent in one side. Probably some rust lurking...

I'd ask on BMW 2002 forums, but I can't seem to find any.

Thanks.

I saw a '76 2002 in Fairfield and I think it may have been a tii. The seller was asking for $6K and probably got his price. The car was immaculate and had tastefull upgrades such as front and rear spoiler and fog lamps. Looked real cool.

Try roadfly.com, there's a pretty active '02 forum there:

Bimmers.com also has a classified section.

I bought one a few months ago for $2000. It has an oil leak, needed new brake lines and has some rust but it's a strong driver and still pretty presentable.

www.Traderonline.com is also a good classifieds site. Living in CA you should be able to find a nice car for $3500.

Ahh, finally a chance to post some BMW 02 pictures here on the 911 board.

This is my car, a '71 1600 touring. Only 6% of the 02 series were touring models (hatchback-body), so they are pretty rare. I don't think they were ever officially imported to the US.

Can't help you with US prices, but in Europe the prices are on their way up, I think you would have to pay from $4000 and up for a nice 02, ti and tii's are of course more.

A BMW 2002 thread...cool.
I have a 2002 Touring. Bought it in 1991 in the UK. It's RHD and has typical UK car rust.
Interior is pretty good due to the regular absence of sun.
The special feature on this car is tinted glass, not a UK option, but this car RHD car was collected from the BMW actory by a UK millitary serviceman stationed in Germany.
I recently bought a one-of-a-kind tube and oak slat roof rack at a swap meet.
You can see it needs some bodywork, but it's reasonable.
The box in the back has a spare 1600cc block, hence the low rear ride height - not rusted spring perches!
The paperwork is all done, I can register and drive this car in CA ........if only I had some time!

and , if I may, BMW people are just as fanatical about there 4 wheels. Same type of work for me. It's all in the detail of prep, then paint... no tape lines except at apertures, always. NO TAPE LINES....

wevoid,

Your car looks just like mine did when I got it! In fact if it wasn't for the wheels and the newer grill on your car I couldn't tell the difference myself. Drove it for two years like that before I did the rust repairs. My feet got wet through the rusty floor when it was raining... I wish you luck in restoring yours, it's a car well worth putting time and money into.

Sonic dB,

Check out the BMW 02 racing history!
And drive one...

And it's got standing pedals

Ove,

I had my car in the UK for about 6 years. It used to be my daily UK wheels when I was commuting back and forwards between the UK and USA. I think I have done about 50K miles in it since I bought it.
I used to have a gold '72 Tourer before that, grille like yours, Ti spec motor (non original) What a blast! but still nothing comapred to my '72 MFI 911. Great utility vehicle though, had to sleep in mine a couple of times, 5' 9" can stretch out in the back for alcohol induced slumber....
The gold one got stripped down after an accident involving a beligerent trailer towing Volvo on the M3 one summer's day in 1987.
Some of the gold car parts went into this fun beast that my brother and I built during an 8 week frenzy in 1993.

http://varchitects.com.au/racecar/

"R"-Style early 70's German car performance.
The current owner has a real blast, as you can see in the videos. We still can't remember why we thought it was a good idea to sell it....

Do you have any parts for a Getrag 235-5 ? I have a partial one I am trying to complete for the white Tourer.

Regards

Hayden

Hayden,

Sorry, I don't have any parts for the 235-5 - box.
These are VERY hard to find now, so consider yourself lucky even if it's not complete. A friend of mine had one, but sold it two years ago for around $1000. Tell me which parts you need and I'll keep my eyes open just in case...
Asking a dealer may be worth a try. I once found a set of new tii struts at my local dealer and got them cheaper than what a used pair sell for.

A 5 speed from the "big 6" engines will fit the 4 cyl. engine, so that's what I will do, although it requires cutting the gearbox tunnel and raising it a bit to accomodate the larger box.
The reasons I do this is that I can get one of those cheap, they can deal with more HP (not really that important for me yet, but you newer know what the future brings) and I don't mind modifying the tunnel. It is heavier than the 4 cyl. box, but not that much.
5th is an overdrive gear, which is what I want. 7-8 years ago I drove 3500km through Europe with a 4 speed and the original 4.11 final drive on my 02. That was noisy on the Autobahn

Ove,

Yes, I am lucky, but stupid too. The Indy Orange classic race car had a 235-5 too,.... my first.
Now I am looking for parts for the second.
I have a 232-2(?) with the Porsche style synchro's that I am going to strip to see how much of the shortfall that makes up.
After that it will be keep looking, or start making.....
The two output shafts I have are both worn from where they run in the needle roller in the back end of the input shaft. I think they can be metal sprayed, or hard chrome and re sized. I have all the special 5 speed parts for gear selection, but a fair degree of wear.
The one I have is the road car version, not the even more rare "race" or "rally" ratios.
My 2002's have all had the 3.XX final drive, about 37km/hr per 1000 rpm on 185/70/13, not too bad.
I also had a 1602Lux, it had the 4.11 final drive, we stuffed the Ti spec 2 liter from the crashed gold Tourer into it. First time we went for a top speed run it blew a load of old broken windshield out of the dashboard vents - I guess it had never been 115 mph with the 1.6 liter motor!!

If I can make a cohesive list of 235-5 parts I need I will PM you some time.

Regards

Hayden

Whats so great about the BMW 2002?

'02s are cool They go pretty good, they look, er, germanic, and they are nice and solid. Compared to an equivalent Porsche, they are cheap (if slower). They also rust!

I dunno what they are worth in the US. In New Zealand, a good tii (nice body, nice paint but not perfect) is about US$5000.

The 5spd gearbox from the e21 is almost a bolt in fit, apparently, if you don't mind an overdrive top gear. The advantage of the 235-5 is that it is 1:1 top gear, etc.

Oh, and the little viewed, no traffic Pelican 2002 forum is here:
