Aussie part prices never cease to amaze
I just called Willoughby Porsche to get a price on a CV Joint gasket (923-332-297-00-M30). Guess how much they want for it. Go on, guess...
Pelican price: $2.75 each (with $37 shipping to Australia). Porsche Willoughby: $32. EACH. AND I have to pick it up. ![]() Unbelievable. I can order 2 of them from the States and even with the outrageous shipping charge, I'm still ahead of the game. (In fact I'll just be making them up myself out of cork, unless I think of something else that I need to order from PP in the next month or so.) How do they sell any parts at all at those prices?

I know...
I have been in the game longer than I care to admit now and shouldn't be shocked by the genuine prices...but every now and again my breath is taken away. It's not the fault of the dealers here; it's the pricing set-up from Porsche AG that is the problem now. Try Bob Whyms (BWA Auto Parts) in Sydney. |

Alan, if you have any friends in the States; have Pelican ship to their address - it's generally free shipping in the US continent. Then have the friend stick them in an envelope and mail USPS to Oz.
Otherwise a few of us in the Pcar club up here just do joint Pelican order - we keep a running tally like a shopping list and just order each others' stuff.

in Canberra
oil filter at the dealer almost $50 - a parts shop $15 Johns idea of a group purchase with PP offsets the sometimes crazy postage cost. |

Rear lens and seal....Porsche Parramatta $263 each, Pelican $97 each.
With the Dollar where it is, even with shipping it's a no brainer..... Cheers, Geoff.

Everytime I need something I add it to my Project List. When it gets to just under $1000 I place the order.
I've spent plenty but buying from the US has saved me even more. As Geoff says, the exchange rate is an even bigger reason! I still buy some things locally but not much.

Pelican insist on using the International Express as I think it's trackable...
International freight/postage is calculated on a volumetric scale that is used globally... so you're paying for air if you don't fill the space. Of course if it's an oversize/weight odd part, you're screwed

I purchased a pair of Bilstein Sports shocks landed here from Pelican for roughly $AUD330. Price from Bilstein here in Australia.....$AUD475! I e-mailed them and asked why the difference in price and their reply was that the US price reflects 'economies of scale' variations in supply costs. Yeah right!
There was a similar variation in the price when I replaced my Bosch coil with one from PPs.

As much as it pisses us all off, I wouldn't take aim at the OZ suppliers without first blasting our thieving Govt. For years they have been robbing us all blind and coating it in some b/s about tariffs to protect local industry. What local industry?? The fact that the US has well over 300million people does have a major effect of course. With less than 25million in Australia we just can't compete in a commercial sense.

I will chime in. I recently went through the purchase of Waynes 101 Projects for your Boxster book. Purchase price from Wayne $24. Postage $45.
I ended up puchasing the book from Amazon and paying the same price for the book, but only $10 postage. Just got the credit card bill. Total price $34.02 AUD. I wish Pelican had some sort of economy postal rate for parts. |

I agree though, normal mail would suit me fine for <$100 items; I'd wear the loss. Truth is in over 10 years of ordering my Porsche stuff from the states I have never had a mail failure. Drop shipping to a US friend is worth it now as generally Pelican ships free internally.

I don't remember the numbers but...
928S Timing Belt from Porsche AU pickup = 928S Timing Belt from retailer in US, plus lots of extras, express shipping and still had "change for a six pack..."

What about tyres? Why are they at least 50 % more than in the US. The dollar is at parity. They are not made in the US and shipped here. As a major expense on cars used regularly on the track it would be great to get tyres at US prices. I know you can but tires in the US and import them but depending on your tyre size your lucky to save much (shipping cost around $700).

Because of my recent experience I thought I would put in 2 cents.
Your $700 would be 1m3 I imagine, depending on the size tyres you are chasing you could probably get 2 sets in that area. A 225/50/16 Parelli P7 is 640 x 240 mm, 8 of those are less than 0.8 m3 if my mathe is ok. rosie |

OT, but I've just taken delivery of some track tyres I bought from the Tire Rack (not for the SC though).
Tyres were US$107 ea and freight was US$89 ea. Fiited up including balancing, ready to drive away they cost me a grand total of A$225 ea. Local quote for the same tyres was A$330 ea, and even then they wouldn't be available in Australia until the end of this year! Less than 10 days delivery door to door; and that included a weekend. Highly recommended!

Good to know Tony. Tyres are a great example of "economies of scale"... way more cars over there.

Front suspension height adjustment bolt, charged $130 bucks for two.
This is a $10 dollar part on Pelican. Tears in my eyes of disgust. I am in a certain mind to call Porsche AG and ask for a list price. Its basically an M10 bolt with a hex head. Total joke. Last edited by strikee; 02-26-2013 at 01:46 AM.. |

I thought $29 for an exhaust gasket (vs PP $7.50) was bad enough. Even with ridiculous shipping ($37 for 6 gaskets) it's still 1/2 price. Unless I need something really fast (which is basically never) I default to O/S suppliers. Hell , even my 911 is from O/S!

my cousin bought a all activity module for their ML series from our host for 359 its the brain that controls central locking etc. the stealers in OZ wanted 1800 dollars for the same part absolutely outrageous price gouging. He also buys direct from tyre rack and after fitting saves anywhere from 200 to 500 bucks on a price of tyres.
