I have a regular vacuum and after dumping out the canister, I also take it outside
and blow everything out with compressed air. You wouldn't believe all the dust that comes out. Especially in the filters. Its a great way to clean them. |

We got our shark a few years back on the recommendation of a friend that has several dogs that she shows.
When some idiot dropped the canister down the stairs and it broke a replacement was easy to find on Amazon.

The feature that makes it great for hardwood is called Duo-Clean. Looks like they have several models with this feature. I think this is the one we got. The brush in front does a minor polish on the floor. It's not a substitute for a floor polisher, but it does a great job for day to day cleaning.

I wanted a duo head model but for the price I went without. it does come with a fantastic hard floor attachment though.

So - Just picked up a Shark uv810 at Costco to replace my broken Dyson DC14 Animal.
The Shark head is pretty narrow and the thing is light. The removable canister/vacuum unit is pretty neat. I just wish it had more storage capacity (it's got roughly half the capacity of my Dyson and I had to empty that every 5 minutes or so....) Not sure I like it yet - I may just fix the Dyson. We did spend some time yesterday at the local vacuum cleaner shop looking at various items. The Sebo's and Miele's are nice, but too much money. Looks like the only serious contenders in bagless are Dyson and Shark. (I've got a couple long-hair cats and the bagless is a must; I bet a bagged vacuum cleaner would need a new bag about every three house cleanings.) The new Dyson's aren't half the machine that my old one was. Last edited by fanaudical; 12-02-2018 at 07:15 PM.. Reason: Adding content... |

Had a rainbow. thought it was great. Then a vacuum salesman put a light on the exchaust from it. The rainbow was putting dust back in the air. Said it was like skipping stones.
Got his Fairfax canister vacuum...And went the next day to the store and bought several other highly rated vacuums. Did comparisons going over an area til that vacuum did not pick up any more. Then went ever that same are with the other vacuums. There were some better than others but the Farifax always picked up stuff the others missed. When I started an area with the Fairfax the others did not pick anything up. Took all the other vacs back to the store and kept the Fairfax. After the first time vacuuming the whole house with the Fairfax noticed there was not hardly any dusting that needed done! There was no such thing as a shark or dyson back then. May be time to do another evaluation.

We had one before , the robot and it was great until it lasted. It was our very first botvac. Everytime I see the dirt it gets, it's just so satisfying to the eyes. I just hope it could have lasted longer though. We've had it for 18months only, unfortunately.

Interesting thread as my 11 yr old Dyson brush motor appears to be giving up. My take is the Dyson animal ball thingie and the Shark current / top -O-line unit are @ $100 apart in price with both on sale. I'm leaning towards spending the extra dough as ours has been really good with regular cleaning.

We came for the world of Rainbow. You'd be amazed what the shark will pick up that the Rainbow left behind. It surprised me since the big sales point for Rainbow was that they always maintained suction due to using water as the filter.

Had 2 Dysons that did not last more that 3 years. Dyson was probably state of the art 10 years ago, but others have caught up. The old, 4 year old Shark is still going strong, but the new one works better, especially on hardwood floors.

After living with the Shark for a couple of weeks, I think I'm going to keep it - and sink money into fixing my old Dyson.

Still on the fence, the fact the shark needs to be emptied more, definitely a downside as we have a road coat Collies. Always hair and stuff drug in from outside.

Got a Shark Duo Apex with all the attachments and extras on a Black Friday sale on their website. I cannot believe how much it pulled up out of the carpets and hardwood floors. The bin was as max after three rooms, granted they were my children's rooms. The carpets looked new after vacuuming. One feature I like is that the motor is not unnecessarily loud.

Our golden retriever sheds a lot. Probably 80% of what the Shark picks up is dog hair. We vacuum up enough to knit a new puppy ever 3-4 days. The little dogs bring in crap too. But emptying the Shark is so easy we don’t find it problematic.

I'm downgrading Shark to one star. MrsWD was in the midst of her pre-Christmas cleaning frenzy when our 85 day old Duo Clean stopped sucking. The motor for the beater bars still ran, but the vacuum motor didn’t. I went through the on-line diagnostics such as they were, changing filters, making sure the hose wasn't clogged, etc. I went a little further and made sure the vacuum motor turned freely. I set it outside for half an hour and when I brought it in it worked again. The motor overheats in about 15 minutes of use. Let it cool down and it works again for 15 minutes.
I called customer support and got some woman in India or Indiana or one of those places where they barely speak English. She walked me through all the same diagnostics that were suggested on-line. I patiently re-did every one. It had cooled off by then and was working fine, and I told her so repeatedly, but she kept reading her script, and walking me through the basic diagnostics. “Please try phluk into differen outlet.” “Why? It’s working fine right now. It will work fine for 15 minutes and then stop.” Finally. “Ifa you woo plea taka the filta off and see if vacuum at opening.” Now we’re getting somewhere. “Yes, as I said, it’s working great!” “OK, please try phluk into differen outlet.” “WHY? It’s sitting here working fine. But it will stop in about 10 minutes now.” (Apparently there may be better electricity at a differen outlet?) Finally she asked for the serial number and also, “The number on phluk.” “What?” “Please provi four digit number on phluk.” “I’m sorry, I don’t see a four digit number anywhere on this thing.” “It on the phluk where you phluk in wall.” I’m thinking, “what the phluk is a phluk?” Taking a wild guess I look at the cord end. No numbers AT ALL, and continue looking for the damn phluk. “Four digit number on phluk you phluk in wall.” On closer examination, there IS a four digit number on one of the prongs. “It’s called a ‘prong’ m’am. The prong is on the end of the phluk.” “OK, please phluk into differen outlet.” “LADY! IT’S WORKING F*&$ing FINE RIGHT NOW!” At that point MrsWD took the phone, before I had a heart attack. So they are sending a new top. We have to pay shipping. I’m thinking we ought to get a whole new vacuum, including a new phluk. MrsWD is on the warpath with Amazon, and we may get one yet. If we do, I’ll revisit my review.
