My family still has a mid-60's big-block Dodge product in the garage. My dad bought that new; my mom has had it ever since. I learned to drive in that car. Original paint, interior, engine, trans, everything - but everything needs to be gone through to make it safe. It won't physically fit in my garage (car is too long) otherwise it would be at my house. I often dream of restoring it, upgrading the brakes, and putting in a modern transmission behind the big block after converting it to TBI. Not a practical car, but would be a nice cruiser.

There is nothing quite like big Detroit iron from that era...
Nothing wrong w doing all of those upgrades and modifications to it but you really don't have to. They drove just fine when they were new and in service, all you need to do is bring the maintenance back to snuff and drive it around.

No, no, no...that car needs a driver with an expensive, well fitted suit, a fedora, and a cigar. And an age inappropriate female companion.

Went over to help clean out the storage area, and found a LOT of boxes marked "Caddy".

Full stainless exhaust
Complete suspension with all bushings, springs, shocks, etc..
Rubber kit, seals, carpet, etc...

And.... a box marked '64 caddy 2x4. Opened it up and its a manifold for dual 4 barrel carbs!! And brand new 500 cfm carbs plus linkage.
And a cam and lifters.
Cant imagine the gas mileage, but go for it???

Also had a set of 18x8s with 245/45s already mounted.
So keep the original wheels, or go with the bling bling?
Original rims have brand new looking tires but are OLD, so need new tires anyway.
Which wheels to use?

My preference would be original wheels and go fast goodies. Have fun!

Put the big wheels, two fours, stainless exhaust, all the other new stuff on it, louver the hood and have a hot fun weekend car. Not like you need it for a daily driver.

I'd leave it stock and just get everything up to snuff. It's not like it's ever going to be a quick car, two 4s are just going to suck a bigger hole in the atmosphere when you step on it. These cars stock drive like a pussy cat, just unbelievable.

The hardest thing to get right on an old Caddy is the sound. The original exhaust had resonators as well as mufflers, so they actually breathed pretty well but were quiet. They had a quiet burble to them at idle. No one ever wants to spend the $$ to replace the exhaust system to stock and they always sound wrong to me. Any loud or cheap sounding exhaust just makes them a POS, IMO.

I agree with the exhaust comment

My T bird has a nice long lasting stainless dual exhaust
, but it sounds like a nascar

Completely wrong mismatch of experiences when driving. The caddy would be the same

Thanks Wayner. She does have a nice stance.
Which is a good segway into my current dilemma.
Started replacing the brake lines and wheel cylinders.
Then while your in there itis struck, and I noticed some worn bushings.
Really wanted to get brakes done and pimp around this summer.
But I'm right there and could keep going and refurb the suspension.
This would take a few weeks, so less pimping this summer.
Do brakes and wait for winter to do suspension?
Or just get er done?

I would do the safety stuff - brakes, rubber gas lines, etc. ...and start driving.

If you're going to do it, do it now. Next summer is not guaranteed to anyone.

Why would it take weeks to get the suspension refreshed?

Just put it in a good shop that does front end and alignment/suspension stuff and pick it up a day later. I'm a mechanic and I pay people to do that stuff.

Use the time saved to shop for a vintage black suit, wayferers, fedora, white oxford, thin black tie...

Have most of the front end torn down already.
Hopefully by early next week I can drop the pieces off at the blasters / powder coaters.

That is the car my lady friend parents had (white hard top)... drove like a cloud!

RE: Dual quads, not sure if you mentioned the engine and I know caddies are famous for mountain motors but that is a LOT of carburetor. I know people who went to dual quads and had to switch back to a single because the car ran $hitty... and as speeder said it will never be a hot rod (not counting the El Dorado funny car that ran locally) but it is your car so do what you like.
