PS: I too am pleasantly surprised the Cayman walked this opinion poll. I've said that all along (and I owned a 996 and Cayman S in succession). I'd add that the 991 shifted the playing field, the wheelbase/track of that car gave it a more Cayman-like turn-in while retaining its superior 911 traction. IMO the 991 whoops the Cayman of the same era, but on the original topic, clear victory for the Cayman of that era of the 996.

Yep, I get it. I haven't driven one, but I've watched the videos, and the sound while not horrible is not remotely as good as my 3.4L.

Yes, the 4cyl turbo that the whole world seems to be going to can ace the fuel econ figures when being driven in a way that only a hyper-miler would drive, but to make power (in an I/C motor) you've got to burn fuel, so if they make more power, they are almost certainly going to get worse mileage unless some really amazing new discovery is made that radically changes what we know about I/C engines.

I'd love a GT4, but I'm not in the position to buy one and I don't think they are going to ever be that inexpensive. I don't think GT3s have ever gotten cheap.

996 C4 cab is a good value but pretty low on the highly desirable list. Maybe spend $25k and get a 987.2 instead.

- Complete engine redesign with the prior 996/987 weaknesses engineered out.
- Much nicer interior.
- Clean crisp lines more consistent with early 911s.

These are not as easily available due to smaller build numbers during the great recession but they are fine cars with nearly bulletproof mechanicals.

The 718 fart 4 engine, the thing i hate is just mostly the sound of the turbo burble .
I've heard several various aftermarket exhausts, they all just sound louder of the same.. I can't like it. though they are obviously faster.

I'de rather have a high revving NA flat 4 that get's closer to 904 carrera engine sounds... (though the intake sound will be hard to replicate)

I love the look of my car. The only appearance item that I like from the 981 is the side vent. I think I'm going to put the spyder side vents on mine which I think will look good. I never understood the whole cayman/boxster side vent thing

Steve, lots of guys remove the cone (or something like that?) behind the real grill and install mesh to keep the bugs out. Wonder if you have done that yet? My car came like that

They have a silencer just inside the grille that gives you more intake noise when removed.

The common name for the procedure is "desnorked" or "desnorkled" despite the fact that the snorkle is left in place, but a "blocking plate" in front of the snorkle is removed. That plate is supposed to keep debris out of the intake tract. The rumor is that during testing a car aspirated a cigarette that was tossed out another cars window which caused a fire.

Right, it gives more intake noise. I haven't tried it, but I'd like to. It's not hard to remove. I should do it one day just to see what the difference is. I drive the car with the windows and top up most of the year anyway, so it would only do so much for me.

I'm pretty sure that the Spyder vents leave the plate in place.

Given how different a Cayman is from a 911 C4 Cab, maybe figure out if you want

1) Mid engine vs rear engine
2) Open top vs closed top

If still not clear, then take the two samples you found and go for a test drive.

300hp 911 vs 260hp cayman
Mid engine lightness in response vs rear engine tail heavyness

In the end, either choice hardly seems like a punishment

More like 3000# depending upon options. The 718 Boxster S in manual empty starts at 2988 (PDK 3054). The base boxster is a few pounds lighter. The cayman GTS is heavier (3032 man - 3098 pdk) (probably due to all of the options that it gets as standard).

I did find a place online that says that the lightest boxsters in 2000 - 2002 weighed 2778.

The 718 GT4 and Spyder are both weighing 3200#

What don’t you like about them? I was in the market for those but they were too spendy. I bought these Cayman wheels instead as they look like modern Fuchs and cheaper.
