Well, there's a religion for that too.
Vultures feast on dead bodies

Parsis don't cremate or bury corpses but leave them for vultures to feed on at a place called Tower of Silence. After 1990, when there was a decline in the number of vultures, many began using electric crematorium.

Hey, closure is never seeing me again and seeing the irreverent obit I wrote in the paper.
Burn my azz and scatter me on a favorite fishing lake and a ski slope. I would have a platform built in my woods up north and let the scavengers recycle me if I could get away with it. Even more $$ saved.

This is kept in the folder with my will:

STATEMENT OF INTERMENT, CREMATION and WISHES

I, David Martin, the undersigned, having previously executed a Last Will and Testament on the date hereof, hereby state that, in addition to the directives and bequests set forth in said Last Will and Testament, it is my desire that my remains be cremated.

My further wishes and directives are as follows: I don't want some somber funeral. I want my friends and family to have many drinks and talk about all the crazy **** I did in life. I don't want to take up space in the ground. I'd like my ashes spread someplace interesting, maybe somewhere I haven't been. Preferably somewhere nice .

My wishes are already written out. I want a simple cremation. No wake/funeral. Then my ashes tossed in the Atlantic. If anyone wants some for whatever reason they can have some.

The only difference would be if I croaked in the line of duty. Then Id let my dept do a Firefighters service.

I want my remains spread out across Disneyland. And I don't want to be cremated.

It's nice to have a specific place to visit where you know someone's remains are when you want to pay your respects.

My wife and I opted to be crispy critters and scattered in the dirt. No funerals but just a remembrance to see if anyone remembers. Beats being composted.

I think there are plenty of folks that feel that way, but certainly not everyone.

This^^
Funerals are for the living, not the dead. Part of the grieving process.
I say let them decide, but let them know there is no need to extravagance or $$$ on YOUR behalf.

About 5 years ago an old friend and mentor passed, he was kind of a reformed hippie if there is such a thing.
His request was to throw a party to celebrate his life instead of a service to commemorate his death.
It was in his back yard, fully catered with open bar and live band. Still prolly cheaper than a funeral home. Lots of people showed up, old friends I used to work with but hadn't seen in a decade. Almost like a reunion of sorts.
now THAT was a service. I like that.
My wife knows I think that would be cool, but it's up to her what she wants to do.

I know of a long time PCA member that loved DE's. He had his ashes spread at Moss's corner at Mosport.

I agree. It's been a couple of years since I visited, but my family cemeteries give me a sense of where I came from. There are graves of people I have heard many stories about, but died long before I met them. It gives me a sense of connection with my ancestors that is important to me. Just the names of my ancestors - Levi, Jemima, Gustin, Lafayette - are stories in themselves.
I do want a stone or some sort of memorial so 50 years from now my great, great grandchildren can look at my memorial and ask, "Is that the old hippie you talked about? What's a hippie?"

Great to visit, but wouldn’t want to live there.

I wonder if anyone gets a headstone without actually being buried? It would be kind of nice to have something in the family plot but I don't see a need for my remains to be there.

For me, since I do not attend church, a funeral and a memorial service seems inappropriate.

My wife and kids know a small party/BBQ is the only formality I want.

And no obit beyond loving husband and father.

Of course. It's real estate. They'll sell you anything.

My family has an unusual tradition going back to my great-great grandfather that i intend to continue with:

We write our life story down for future generations or at least recite it and record it to be transcribed.
It gives a good indication of what life was like, and what the person was like and went through. Can't get that from a history book or photographs.

Here are a few clips from grandpa's story:
